It was a patchy performance for three-time champion Victoria Azarenka as she began the quest for another Melbourne title. The tournament number two, led seeds to winning starts as she beat Swede Johanna Larsson 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the sweltering summer temperatures.

Serena Williams may not go down in history as the greatest player ever, but she continues to challenge for that claim and in Brisbane, she began the new season as ended the old one, showing the rest of the world’s elite that they are at least a step behind her.
This was a sort of an anti-serving contest; Serena was struggling, and we know about Maria Sharapova's shoulder problems. Still, Sharapova lasted long enough to earn the #3 ranking.

Maria Sharapova made a winning comeback from a shoulder injury as she claimed her first victory since June to advance over Caroline Garcia of France 6-3, 6-0. The Russian third seed in a field headed by Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka was working for the first time with new coach Sven Groenveld.
