As Sam Groth battled fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in front of the thousands of fans packed into Hisense Arena, Wednesday in Melbourne, the contrast was clear.
It was a day that will not soon be forgotten Down Under. Six Aussie men advanced to the second round on day one at the Australian Open, and four did it in five sets. One way or another, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Nick Kyrgios, James Duckworth, Marinko Matosevic, Bernard Tomic, and Sam Groth found the winners' circle on Monday at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open will begin with a bang on Monday in Melbourne. Both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are in action, with Nadal kicking things into gear during the day before Federer headlines the night session inside Rod Laver Arena. A local Aussie flavor will come in the form of rising stars Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Bernard Tomic is looking leaner and meaner--in the tennis sense, of course--at the beginning of this 2015 season. Combine the result of what appears to be a more determined work ethic with Tomic's favorite time of the year (the Australian summer) and you have a man who can do serious damage at this week's Brisbane International.
