Singles competition at the World Tour Finals gave us its seventh consecutive straight-setter when Tomas Berdych rolled over Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
If the London faithful got to choose, both Roger Federer and Andy Murray would be a part of Saturday's semifinals. And that still is a possibility even though the two fan favorites have to face each other on Thursday night at the World Tour Finals. Federer will already be through even before he takes the court if Kei Nishikori fails to beat Milos Raonic in straight sets.
With all the feeling of one of those Grand Slams that insist on playing first round matches for the entire first week, the search for match of note continued on Tuesday after the curse of the breadstick score-lines.
Even though Roger Federer is not yet assured of a place in the semifinals, fans went home happy from the O2 Arena on Tuesday at the World Tour Finals. They had the pleasure of witnessing stellar, straight-set performances from both Federer and Andy Murray. Federer remains in ideal shape to reach the last four in London while Murray stays alive.

Such can be the lottery of ticket-buying for the World Tour Finals, you have to feel for ticket holders for either the day session, the night session or, heaven forefend, both sessions on Day 2, when the crowd were treated to two one-sided encounters that both ended in an hour (but remember, tube time, so bonus).
Group B play at the World Tour Finals will begin on Monday after Group A action got started with wins by Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori. Stan Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych will kick off the Day 2 proceedings in the afternoon, to be followed by Novak Djokovic vs. Marin Cilic. Of the four, only Cilic has never previously made a London appearance.
Two London contenders survived tense third-set battles to keep alive their chances of appearing at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Milos Raonic was the first to pull off a gritty win, beating qualifier Jack Sock 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(4). It was the Canadian’s sixth straight win – and fifth in 2014 – over Sock.
The two U.S. Open finalists are having no trouble where they left off in New York. Champion Marin Cilic is through to the China Open quarterfinals and runner-up Kei Nishikori has advanced to the last eight in Tokyo. Cilic took care of Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday, while Nishikori got past Donald Young 6-4, 7-6(4) in his quarterfinal match.
Following in the footsteps of Marin Cilic, who recovered from a four-month suspension late in 2013 to win this summer's U.S. Open, Viktor Troicki is also making an impressive comeback. On the shelf for one year from last July to this one, Troicki posted his best result since being suspended when he upset David Ferrer in the Shenzhen Open second round on Thursday.
