Seeds had it sweet with run of victories for favored players with No. 1 Serena Williams leading off with a defeat of Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 6-3, It was a similar outcome for second seed Simona Halep, whose game has gone off the boil since her surprise French Open final. The Romanian won her second-round contest over Zhu Lin of China 7-5 6-4.

Sam Querrey ranked No 54 in the world and No 1 seed in the tournament took the win over Frederick Nielsen 7-6(5), 6-3. Local fan favorite No 2 seed in the tournament Tim Smyczek took the win over Nils Langer 6-3, 6-1. Smyczek commented about his match, "I was really happy with the way it went, he came out playing quite well, he was playing high risk tennis but I stayed with my game and it paid off."

Alize Cornet nailed her third win this season over Serena Williams as the American top seed quit with viral illness during her opening second-round match while holding a 6-5 lead. The last to take down Williams three times in the same year was Justin Henin in 2007. Williams said later she felt poorly in a match which was past of a run of upset losses by seeds at the new event.

Caroline Wozniacki briefly built a 3-1 lead in the second set. That was the only part of the match to really seem competitive. Otherwise, Ana Ivanovic was in almost complete charge. It took her an hour and 39 minutes to win her fourth title of the season, following Auckland, Monterrey, and Birmingham.
The ITF has announced the results for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group semifinals, World Group play-offs and Zone Group ties taking place on 12-14 September. The World Group play-off tie between India and Serbia in Bangalore has been suspended overnight due to rain and will resume at 12:00 local time (06:30 GMT) on Monday 15 September.
Roger Federer will get his chance for extra points after all. Switzerland entered Saturday's action leading Italy 2-0, but they didn't really go in for the kill. Rather than have Federer team with Stan Wawrinka to try to win after three matches, they had Wawrinka play with Marco Chiudinelli.
In the first set, Novak Djokovic looked very unsteady, as if he wasn't quite well, and Kei Nishikori was on fire. An early break gave Nishikori the set. In the second set, something started to get to him. Maybe it was the high heat; maybe it was just the wear and tear from his two tough matches in the previous rounds.
Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka could only admire the will power of Kei Nishikori after the Japanese rebounded from a post-midnight finish in his previous round to beat the Swiss third seed 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-3 for a US Open semi-final place.
