Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Stan Wawrinka were never part of the Miami Open draw. The same goes for Dominic Thiem, Gael Monfils, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Novak Djokovic was in it--briefly--but lost his opening match to Benoit Paire on Friday.
Rafael Nadal is out. So, too, is Andy Murray. Stan Wawrinka, David Goffin, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Richard Gasquet are also on the sidelines. But Novak Djokovic is back, Kei Nishikori is continuing his return to tennis, and Milos Raonic is also making a rare appearance on tour.
Stan Wawrinka is out of both the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open, he announced on Thursday. It is an unsurprising--and probably smart--move for the 32-year-old Swiss, who has not appeared to be ready for the rigors of a Masters 1000 tournament--and certainly not two in a row.
This week won’t make the same headlines that those of the previous seven days delivered, as Roger Federer’s return trip to the No. 1 ranking is now complete.
Grigor Dimitrov is out and Stan Wawrinka is in the Sofia field. Reigning champion Dimitrov was forced to pull out of his home tournament, which begins next week, due to a shoulder injury.

The 2018 Australian Open draw ceremony was held on Thursday night at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena. It was less chaotic than it might if been Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori had not withdrawn from the men's field, but there was still plenty of intrigue with several players seeded lower than usual due to injury-plagued inactivity.
The upcoming Australian Open has already been plagued by a few withdrawals and it could be especially chaotic with once-injured top players seeded lower than they should be due to unusually low rankings, but 2018's first Grand Slam got a boost on Tuesday with positive news from both Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka.
When the main draw began at Roland Garros, 127 men were playing for second place (see: Nadal, Rafael). They did the same, it should be noted, at Wimbledon one month later (see: Federer, Roger).
