After the glitz and glamour of the draw ceremony, and some much needed rainfall to disperse the legendary (and not in a good way) haze, it was down to business at the Media All-Access sessions.

What is it about Maria Sharapova and three hour matches? She had led 5-1 in the second set, had three match points, and failed to convert. She lost the set on a double-fault. It meant that she had to stay out there for three hours and nine minutes -- and all of it effectively for nothing.
Maria Sharapova defeated Agnieszka Radwanska over three dramatic sets on Friday, but it was not enough to keep her Singapore dream alive. Maria Sharapova bowed out of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global with her head held high after a battling back to defeat a determined Agnieszka Radwanska, 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-2.
By virtue of Friday's results at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, Serena Williams has clinched the year-end World No.1 ranking, the fourth time in her career the American has finished a season at No.1 in the world after doing it in 2002, 2009 and 2013.
One race ends, another begins. Maria Sharapova can surely forget about the year-end #1. The question now is, can she manage to hold off Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep in the contest for #2? Maybe Sharapova was still tired after her opening match, but this wasn't really competitive. It took only an hour and fifteen minutes, and Sharapova won a feeble 40% of the points.
It has been a rough week for Americans in Basel, Valencia, and in Singapore. Steve Johnson lost his Swiss Indoors Basel opener to Milos Raonic 7-6(4), 6-4. John Isner and Stefan Kozlov, the only two USA representatives in the Valencia singles draw, lost in the first round. Even Serena Williams suffered a shocking 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Simona Halep at the women's year-end championship.
We wondered, after this was over, if Serena was having trouble with her knee. But she said otherwise, simply attributing the result to playing poorly. In term of scoreline, one of the poorest results of her career. And it means that, yes, the #1 ranking is still in play, although Maria Sharapova will have to step things up.
What in the world has gotten into Irina-Camelia Begu? She has one WTA title (Tashkent 2012) and a couple of other finals (Marbella 2011, Budapest 2011) -- but those were bottom-tier events. And, here, she has beaten two Top Twenty players, Ekaterina Makarova and now Lucie Safarova.
Eugenie Bouchard and Maria Sharapova are among the early arrivals in Singapore as the inaugural edition of the WTA Championships gets underway next week in Asia.
