Dominika Cibulkova has reached her first Grand Slam event final at the Australian Open and while there were technical and physical issues she had to address during the off-season, the Slovak needed a mental boost too.
Roger Federer went back to the future with a dominating vintage win over hammered Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 on Monday to start the second week with a fourth-round victory. The Swiss played plenty of serve-and volley the day after the birthday of new coach Stefan Edberg...
Not a huge surprise given current form, but Caroline Wozniacki was defending fourth round points. She will lose her Top Ten spot. Garbine Muguruza is up to #35 -- and seems sure to climb even higher. Maybe not this week, but soon.
By contrast to Azarenka, Sharapova spent three and a half hours feeling the full burden of the heat; it's a good thing she has a day off! Karin Knapp managed to add a few points but will fall at least one ranking spot, from #44 to #45.
Never before since extreme temperatures were first recorded in Melbourne, has the thermometer risen above 100 degrees Fahrenheit four days in succession. And finally, 1:52pm today as the temperature hit 43.3 Celsius (109.94 Fahrenheit) degrees...
It was a patchy performance for three-time champion Victoria Azarenka as she began the quest for another Melbourne title. The tournament number two, led seeds to winning starts as she beat Swede Johanna Larsson 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the sweltering summer temperatures.
Victoria Azarenka heads the nominations for the 2014 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Zone Group I events taking place in the week of 3 February alongside the World Group and World Group II first round ties.
Roger Federer on what he learned from his five-set loss to former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in the 2003 Davis Cup semifinals: “I think it really proved to me that I could play great tennis not just for a set, two sets, but three sets or maybe even longer against the toughest guys out there,” Federer said of his five-set loss.
Sydney wasn't the only place hit with withdrawals on Sunday. Hobart didn't lose any seeds -- but, in an outcome that probably won't surprise anyone, it did lose Venus Williams. Venus pulled out after losing her final on Saturday, replaced by Lucky Loser Silvia Soler-Espinosa.

This was a sort of an anti-serving contest; Serena was struggling, and we know about Maria Sharapova's shoulder problems. Still, Sharapova lasted long enough to earn the #3 ranking.
Rafael Nadal will not only play Miami in 2014, but also the new event in Rio De Janiero. He won't play Vina Del Mar and has not decided yet whether he will compete in Buenos Aires and Acapulco.
Ilie Nastase had this to say about 22-year-old Simona Halep who won her sixth title of the year in Sofia. "To finish the year with a win like this is great for Simona. It will give her confidence going into the new year, which begins pretty soon in Australia." . . .
Simona Halep can't seem to get off to an easy start these days. She must be getting really tired. On the other hand, she has the whole off season to rest....
A strange match -- and not just because it featured #1 versus #2 in the semifinal. Simona Halep started reasonably well in the first set, collapsed, took charge in the second, went down a break in the third, then took charge again.
