Gael Monfils and Fabio Fognini delivered again at the French Open, producing a match that was short on quality at times but off the charts in drama. When it was all said and done, Monfils survived a back-and-forth third-round tussle with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 victory.

There is one American woman still standing in the singles competition in Paris. (Actually, she is probably sitting, since it is evening and she played hard earlier today.) No surprise – it’s Sloane Stephens.
Roger Federer dropped a set for the first time this fortnight but still managed to book a spot in the last 16 of the French Open with a 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-4 victory over Dmitry Tursunov on Friday. Federer needed three hours and seven minutes to set up a meeting with Ernests Gulbis.
Two Canadians will are through to the second week at Roland-Garros after Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) both won their third round matches on Friday in Paris, site of the tennis season’s second Grand Slam event.

The only sure thing about Roland Garros is the terre battue. The dust leaves its mark on anyone who passes through the gates, whether they are a contender, a world number one or a spectator.

Court Phillippe Chatrier was the scene of another victory for Rafael Nadal Thursday afternoon in Paris. It wasn’t a final match-up, but merely another step up the ladder that is leading to the final Sunday at Roland Garros. June is good for Nadal, as he has celebrated every birthday here since he had his 18th.
No matter that Warren Buffett does not offer $1 billion for a perfect French Open bracket like he does for the NCAA basketball tournament. Nobody would come close. Among those in the third round are Jack Sock, Dusan Lajovic, and Donald Young.
