Four players lost their first match at the World Tour Finals. That always has been the case and always will be--barring a change in format. And every time they still have a chance to progress in the tournament and even win it. Such is the situation for Andy Murray, Milos Raonic, Tomas Berdych, and Marin Cilic.
Now we have had the first rounds, it will be time to get the calculators out, take shoes and socks off to work out all the possible permutations as the two winners and the two losers of the first two matches (still with me?) get to grips in round two.
Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori are in good shape after winning their first matches at the World Tour Finals and one will have either officially clinched or almost clinched a semifinal spot after they face each other on Tuesday. Andy Murray and Milos Raonic, on the other hand, are in dire need of a victory following opening losses.
The afternoon crowd left the O2 Arena a little bit disappointed, but Sunday's night-session fans got exactly what they came to see: vintage Roger Federer. Federer kicked off his 2014 World Tour Finals campaign with a 6-1, 7-6(0) round-robin win over Milos Raonic. That had been preceded by Andy Murray's 6-4, 6-4 loss to Kei Nishikori.

Whom would the players in the two World Tour Finals groups have preferred in their foursomes: Milos Raonic or Marin Cilic? It's a tough call. Raonic has arguably been more consistent from start to finish in 2014, but Cilic is the U.S. Open champion. A relatively slow surface seems to favor Cilic, but Raonic is coming off a runner-up finish in Paris--where the court plays almost exactly the same.
The World Tour Finals draw ceremony was held on Monday afternoon. With only eight players in the field, it did not take long for everything to be figured out. Novak Djokovic was already guaranteed to be in Group A as the No. 1 player in the world and No. 1 seed, while Roger Federer was assured of being in Group B at No. 2. That left only six men to be drawn.
Apart from a strange, brief and eventually irrelevant period midway through the first set when his opponent won eight consecutive points, Novak Djokovic was rarely troubled as he retained his BNP Paribas Masters title here at Bercy with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Milos Raonic.

Novak Djokovic, looking like the world No 1 and Milos Roanic, who is starting to look as if he wants to challenge for that position, will face off in the final of the BNP Paribas Masters here on Sunday.
The 2014 World Tour Finals singles field is set thanks to Milos Raonic's quarterfinal win at the BNP Paribas Masters on Friday followed by David Ferrer's loss. Facing a must-win situation, Raonic beat Roger Federer for the first time in his career. Ferrer had to answer with a victory of his own, but he fell to Kei Nishikori 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Andy Murray's recent results show that he is getting back toward the game's elite, but perhaps he's still just "getting," not "gotten." This means he won't be returning to #4 this week -- he'll be no better than #6. Novak Djokovic will stay at #1; indeed, in light of the next result, his chances of being the year-end #1 are getting a lot better.
Milos Raonic, clinging on to the possibility of making the top eight for the ATP Finals in London, finally worked out a way to beat Roger Federer in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Masters here, winning a tight struggle 7-6, 7-5.
