Teams are moving into place for this weekend's opening, with new Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka saying he will front up for Switzerland against Serbia in Novi Sad. "Davis Cup, it's really important for me. I'm really proud. It's a big honor to play for my country. So for sure I'm still thinking to go there...

Rafael Nadal came in with a hand blister. He came out with a back injury -- and no title. Nadal suffered the injury in the second set, and some watchers thought he would retire. But he was already in trouble by then.
Don't know what to say really after watching the men's final Sunday night in Melbourne. Except this is what I have been wishing could happen at a grand slam for a while. I know the big 4 have dominated tennis for some time now but I kinda like that idea that more than just 4 guys have a chance coming into a slam to win.
Eventually, some player was going to take out a member of the Big 4 and win a Grand Slam. It had not occurred since 2009 when Juan Martin Del Potro stunned Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the US Open.
Roger Federer went back to the future with a dominating vintage win over hammered Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 on Monday to start the second week with a fourth-round victory. The Swiss played plenty of serve-and volley the day after the birthday of new coach Stefan Edberg...
On the other hand, this opens a big opportunity for Murray and for David Ferrer. Juan Martin del Potro seemed to be rather dazed by the end -- perhaps the heat got to him; he's a very big guy, after all -- and Roberto Bautista Agut played very good tennis, and it ended with del Potro the first of the top ten seeds to fall.
Today was a long one. For the first time all tourney the heat rule came into affect and pushed tennis back in to the wee hours of the night. The day concluded with 5 setters spread all over the grounds, the upset of the tournament so far was my guy Del Po going out in the 2nd rd.
Men play one semifinal Thursday, 1/23 but it is a night match. The women, however, will play two semifinals on that day and the second of those will face some challenge from the heat, but nothing like they are facing today and tomorrow.
Rafel Nadal won his opening match 6-4 when Bernard Tomic was forced to retire after losing the the opening set 6-4 with a leg injury. The win in 41 minutes marked Nadal's return to Melbourne after missing 2013 as he recovered from knee problems.
The heat continues to play a big role in this years AO. While it's supposed to cool down dramatically by the weekend, some players are finding it difficult to make it to week 2. Go ahead and put Djokovic in the finals, only threat on his half of the draw is Berdych, but I don't think he can hang with Djoker in best of 5.
Caroline Wozniacki says that her now fiancée, Rory McIlroy, got down on his knees to propose to her. . New ATP CEO Chris Kermode made his first presentation to the ATP players at their general meeting in Melbourne last weekend and he impressed them to the point where no questions were asked of him…Martina Hingis is coaching Sabine Lisicki...

Juan Martin del Potro blew out Bernard Tomic in the Sydney final, which is an indication that if he is actually fit enough to contest numerous three-of-five set matches that he might have chance to win another major. Perhaps that major will be the 2014 Australian Open...
Nadal faces an interesting first round in a hot Bernard Tomic, but Rafa got plenty of prep in winning Doha and should be ready for the Aussie. If it happens, his third round match against Monfils could be a tougher challenge. Monfils was able to take a set in the finals of Doha.
