Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were hardly more than innocent bystanders during the first day of Davis Cup final action in Lille, France. At least Federer had an excuse, coming off a long week at the World Tour Finals that ended when he had to pull out of the title match against Novak Djokovic due to a back injury. Tsonga, on the other hand, simply got outplayed by Stan Wawrinka.
Definitely not the sort of match Roger Federer wanted as he tries to take the #1 ranking. Even though Jeremy Chardy has been fighting a foot injury, this took more than two and a half hours, and Federer blew two match points in the second set, and he hasn't yet gained any ground on Novak Djokovic, who made the third round the previous day. Jeremy Chardy will almost certainly end the year at #29 or #30.
Injured Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the exhibition International Premier Tennis League competition in Asia with his right wrist injury apparently still bothering him. The one-time No. 1 has not played since losing in the Wimbledon fourth round.
Roger Federer bounced back from a U.S. Open semifinal loss to eventual champion Marin Cilic by winning the opening singles rubber in this weekend's Davis Cup tie between Switzerland and Italy on Friday. Federer treated the home crowd in Geneva to a 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Simone Bolelli to give the Swiss a 1-0 lead against Italy.

No matter that the two 2012 U.S. Open finalists were in the same section of the bracket this time around. At the beginning of the tournament, a rematch in the quarterfinals was far from a guarantee. After all, Novak Djokovic found himself near John Isner and Philipp Kohlschreiber in the draw while Andy Murray landed in the same eighth as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be facing each other for the second time this summer on American hard courts when they do battle in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Monday. With CBS owning afternoon TV coverage rights for Labor Day weekend, all of the biggest names are taking the court early in the day...
By the looks of things, Novak Djokovic's little summer vacation is over, and he's back at work. He leaves Sam Querrey still a little below the Top Fifty -- but at least Querrey seems finally to be going in the right direction.
The first full day of men's second-round action at the U.S. Open will take place on Thursday. Among those in action are former champions Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, who are still on a collision course for the quarterfinals. Djokovic is going up against Paul-Henri Mathieu while Murray is facing Matthias Bachinger.
The U.S. Open gets underway on Monday and what should be hot start will feature Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Stan Wawrinka. Among those also kicking off their fortnights are Canadians Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil plus Toronto champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Here's the final installment. The draw looks very good for Federer. Djokovic, Murray, Raonic, Wawrinka and Tsonga all in the other half. Ferrer, Berdych, Monfils and Gasquet fight it out for the privilege of playing Roger in the semis after he deals with Dimitrov in the quarters.
Novak Djokovic's hard-court struggles continued on Thursday with a 7-6(6), 7-5 loss to Tommy Robredo in the third round of the Western & Southern Open. Djokovic is now a modest 2-2 since winning Wimbledon, having previously lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the same stage of last week's Rogers Cup.
