The score makes this look closer than it was -- Roger Federer lost only three points on serve (he won 94% of first serve points, 92% of second serve points). Ivo Karlovic did pretty well on serve, too, but you knew he was doomed if it came to a tiebreak. For a guy who wasn't sure he would play, Federer certainly looks solid...

Edouard Roger-Vasselin has seen his ranking slide significantly lately, but he wasn't defending anything this week; this will probably let him gain at least a little.
This time, Tomas Berdych had his first serve working; he put sixty-odd percent of his first deliveries in the court. As a result, he was never broken. He's still only #7 in safe points, but he's in the soft half of the draw.
Former grand slam finalist Marcos Baghdatis beat Miguel Angel Reyes of 6-2 6-4, American Donald Young put out Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-3 6-3 and Rio finalist Alexandr Dolgopolov started with a defeat of eighth seed Vasek Pospisil 6-2, 6-2.

A depressing result so soon after Karlovic made the Memphis final. Any additional points will count for Kevin Anderson.
Steve Johnson, a four time NCAA titlist during his time at USC, scored the best win of his pro career in the second round of the Delray Beach Open by ousting top seed Tommy Haas 6-4, 2-6, 7-6.
This was not exactly a thrilling final (other than the odd moment when Marin Cilic managed to get a point replayed because the ball had been damaged). Tomas Berdych was never broken -- indeed, never faced a break point after his first service game -- and he converted three of four break points against Cilic. He won almost 60% of the points.
After all the upsets we'd had to this point, this seems almost unnatural. A seed winning? What is the world coming to? What Tomas Berdych is coming to, or at least coming close to, is the #6 ranking. Win the title and it's his; indeed, he will be just bare points behind Juan Martin del Potro in the contest for #5. Ernests Gulbis will be #23 or #24.
French players won four of five matches on the day as the home indoor event began to gain pace. Unknown Pierre-Hugues Herbert beat Andres Artunedo of Spain 6-4, 6-3 while No. 249 qualifier Albano Olivetti put out compatriot Kenny De Schepper 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 with a 14-ace performance.
