Not only did Rafael Nadal lose his match in Basel, he also announced that he was pulling out of Paris for were originally called "personal reasons." Which turns out to be appendix surgery (scheduled for November 3); he is through for the year. He'll have to rest for more than a month before resuming training.

It’s a rarity when a 14-match winning streak isn’t even your best spell of the season. Such is the case though for resurgent Belgian David Goffin, who is happy for the 2014 season to just go on and on. Twelve months ago told a very different story for Goffin.

Tennis legend Roger Federer will return to Madison Square Garden to face Grigor Dimitrov and headline the annual BNP Paribas Showdown on Tuesday, March 10, it was announced today.
This is about as good as it gets when it comes to a pair of 500-point tournaments. Roger Federer will play in front of home fans as the No. 1 seed at the Swiss Indoors Basel, where Rafael Nadal’s comeback from a wrist injury and perseverance through appendicitis will continue.
This was pretty straightforward: Marin Cilic broke once in the middle of the first set, and again at the beginning of the second, and he was never broken. It's his fourth title of the year -- twice as many as he had ever won before even if you ignore the fact that one of them was the U. S. Open.
Sunday's showdown between David Ferrer and Andy Murray at the Erste Bank Open not only had a title on the line but also World Tour Finals implications. The two veterans entered this week separated by one spot in the race to London, both outside the top eight with Ferrer in ninth and Murray in 10th.

US Open champion Marin Cilic has claimed the fifth spot at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The Croat will make his debut at the year-end event as he joins Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka in the elite eight-man field at the prestigious tournament, to be held at The O2 in London from 9-16 November.
Bernard Tomic's first tournament with Xavier Malisse in his coaching corner continued on Friday with a 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals of the Stockholm Open. At the Kremlin Cup, meanwhile, Ernests Gulbis also prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker. The Latvian held off Andreas Seppi 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(3) to reach the semis.
Top seed Tomas Berdych opened his campaign for a second title at the If Stockholm Open with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Germany's Dustin Brown on Thursday. The 29-year-old Czech saved all three break points he faced during the 83-minute match, and claimed 78 per cent of service points.
Unsurprisingly, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer experienced very different fates at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday. Struggling with appendicitis upon his return from three months away due to a wrist injury, Nadal lost his opening match in straight sets to fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Federer almost bowed out as well despite being a heavy favorite against Leonardo Mayer, but the Swiss saved five match points and survived in a third-set tiebreaker.
Rafael Nadal's comeback to tennis following a three-month layoff due to wrist problems ended abruptly on Friday, with a quarterfinal loss to Martin Klizan at the China Open. Klizan pulled off a 6-7(7), 6-4 , 6-3 upset after two hours and 37 minutes. The Slovak is joined in the semis by Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Tomas Berdych.
Speculation is starting to surface that the move of Roger Federer's physio from the Swiss over to Grigor Dimitrov was merely a sideways swap engineered by Team 8, which is owned by Federer and his agent Tony Godsick and which manages the up-and-coming Dimitrov.
