Roger Federer won the Shanghai Rolex Masters for the first time in his career by defeating Gilles Simon 7-6(6), 7-6(2) on Sunday.

Struggling with appendicitis upon his return from three months away due to a wrist injury, Nadal lost his opening match in straight sets to fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Throughout his illustrious career, Novak Djokovic has captured the title at every single Masters 1000 event except one: the Western & Southern Open. The four-time runner-up has another chance this week in Cincinnati, where he will kick off his campaign on Tuesday night against Gilles Simon.
On Tuesday, seeded players went 5-1 at the bet-at-home Open and were one point away from going 6-0. To say the tide turned on Wednesday would be an understatement.
After Gilles Simon got through his first-round match at the Mutua Madrid Open and set up what was supposed to be a meeting with Roger Federer, the Frenchman joked, "I'm going to ask Mirka to push a bit."
