Tennis is rich with rivalries; McEnroe and Borg, Evert and Navratilova, Sampras and Agassi, Federer and Nadal. However the battle for one-upmanship between the two June-staged grass court tournaments at Queen’s Club, London and Halle in Germany has been intense for the last 22 years.

Competing in the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany must be like always finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for Roger Federer. When he won the final point today, it was his seventh singles title here.

It is Thursday at the Gerry Weber Open and both men contested their first match of the tournament, that could move them up the ladder in giant steps, without so much as having to strike a ball during actual play until this afternoon.
