Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova fulfilled her top seeding after a few rough showings since Melbourne, with the Slovak beating Poland Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.
Gael Monfils, who is committed to play in the BB&T Atlanta Open for the first time in 2014 and is excited about it: “I like to play in front of anybody. I like to play for a full crowd and I like to play on the American hard courts. If the crowd gets into the action, that makes it even better. I'm looking forward to playing in front of the fans in Atlanta for the first time.”
Third Paula Ormaechea of Argentina made a winning start at the new event as she defeated American Nicole Gibbs 6-2, 6-1. But Italy's Nastassja Burnett upset sixth seed Maria Teresa Torro of Spain 7-5, 6-4 at the relatively weak event on a week in which many top women prefer playing in Dubai halfway around the world.

Talk about brutal -- Agnieszka Radwanska was broken seven times. In the short term, surprisingly, it doesn't make much difference. Radwanska had already earned the #3 ranking, and that was as high as she could go. But she loses her chance to reach #2 next week. Simona Halep is still at #10, but she'll be #9 if she wins the title.

Eugenie Bouchard has been getting better almost daily in recent months. It showed in the first set of her match with Serbia's Vesna Dolonc; Bouchard blasted through it in twenty minutes. Then -- perhaps she realized that she was a set away from winning the tie.
At least it looks as if the Russians will soon be out of their misery. As soon as the teams were announced, it was obvious that the Russians would be overmatched by Australia, but the actual contest was more sad than anything else.
