Two London contenders survived tense third-set battles to keep alive their chances of appearing at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Milos Raonic was the first to pull off a gritty win, beating qualifier Jack Sock 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(4). It was the Canadian’s sixth straight win – and fifth in 2014 – over Sock.

Ivo Karlovic's serve was humming -- you don't hit 33 aces against Roger Federer otherwise! Federer's serve was pretty good, too -- he faced only two break points, whereas Karlovic faced four. But Karlovic managed to convert on one chance, and in the second set, Karlovic's serve was untouchable -- 13 aces in the set, 78% of first serves in, 88% of points won on first serve.
Not only did Rafael Nadal lose his match in Basel, he also announced that he was pulling out of Paris for were originally called "personal reasons." Which turns out to be appendix surgery (scheduled for November 3); he is through for the year. He'll have to rest for more than a month before resuming training.

It was an ideal Friday afternoon for David Ferrer and Andy Murray. The two World Tour Finals hopefuls won their respective quarterfinal matches at the Valencia Open and also saw fellow London contender Milos Raonic lose to David Goffin in Basel. Ferrer and Murray are now set to face each other on Saturday in a match that will have significant London implications.

David Goffin saw his 25-match winning streak come to end at the hands of Jerzy Janowicz in the Winston-Salem Open quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. Goffin, coming off three Challenger titles and his first ATP triumph in Kitzbuhel, succumbed to Janowicz 6-4, 6-4 after one hour and 17 minutes.
David Goffin improved his amazing winning streak to 25 matches by defeating Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the third round of the Winston-Salem Open on Wednesday afternoon.
