The Mutua Madrid Open had it all on Wednesday. A marathon in a marquee women's matchup (Serena Williams saved three match points in a win over Victoria Azarenka), hometown dominance (five Spanish men advanced to the last 16, including upsets by Marcel Granollers and Fernando Verdasco), and a 3:00 a.m. finish (Andy Murray vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber).

Once again, all action in Germany was rained out. In the singles final, Andy Murray and Philipp Kohlschreiber were on serve after five games; in the doubles, it was tied at 1-1.
So Global Chick hits the road once more, and worked diligently on the plane to preview the week ahead in sunny Madrid. What a difference a couple of hours makes. The sun was NOT shining, and stars fell a-plenty today on ladies day at The Magic Box.
Rafael Nadal is counting heavily on the emotional lift he expects from playing in next week's Madrid Masters to help lift him out of his current uncertain state on the clay, The winner of four titles at the home event - including two in the last three years - is trying to recover his legendary form after last week's third-round loss in Barcelona.
Our favorite was the famous blue clay. Well done Señor Tiriac. Maybe Sven is right clay is orange. I love watching all the clay events. Monte Carlo is my favorite backdrop.

Clay court season is upon us - the smoky red dust, the soaked socks hued with brick, the strained groin tendons and the lactically-acidic quads. The ball travels higher, revolves with more intensity, and points often require an intermission.
