MEN’S TOUR NEWS FROM BEIJING AND TOKYO: DJOKOVIC, ISNER ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS BY RICKY DIMON

Novak Djokovic extended his perfect record at the China Open to 21-0 by defeating Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon. Djokovic, who is looking to win a fifth title in Beijing, needed one hour and 25 minutes to reach the quarterfinals. He is joined there by John Isner, a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) winner over Tommy Robredo.

Seeds had it sweet with run of victories for favored players with No. 1 Serena Williams leading off with a defeat of Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 6-3, It was a similar outcome for second seed Simona Halep, whose game has gone off the boil since her surprise French Open final. The Romanian won her second-round contest over Zhu Lin of China 7-5 6-4.

Rafael Nadal got in some much-needed match practice on Monday ahead of his first-round singles match at the China Open, albeit in a losing effort. Nadal, who last played at Wimbledon before being sidelined by a wrist injury, teamed up with fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar and fell to Tomas Berdych and John Isner 7-5, 4-6, 10-4.

Rafael Nadal's first-round singles match against Richard Gasquet is not on Monday's China Open schedule, but the world No. 2 will be back in action in a different capacity. After being sidelined for three months with a wrist injury, Nadal is teaming up with Pablo Andujar in the doubles draw and they will kick off their campaign against Tomas Berdych and John Isner.
