There was something wrong with Roger Federer's hand in this match. At the time, at least, no one had a guess as to what -- perhaps an insect bite or a blister. It made things difficult early on, but obviously he got over it! He leaves Simone Bolelli around the #48 ranking he came in with.
It is almost as if the tennis heavenly bodies were reading our observations of the stars feeling jittery on their first time out. Top seed Serena Williams began with a win over Alison Van Uytvanck 6-0, 6-4 as double Wimbledon winner and fourth seed Petra Kvitova rolled over Richel Hogenkamp 6-1, 6-4. Number six Agnieszka Radwanska advanced over Kurumi Nara of with the loss of three games while eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki defeated American Taylor Townsend 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
Top seed Novak Djokovic showed no sign of the stomach virus which laid him low last week as he joined holder Stan Wawrinka with an overwhelming win into the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday. Djokovic put aside his early loss in Doha which got his 2015 preparation off to a poor start, with the world number one bossing Slovenian Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
After a wild first round highlight by some outstanding wins for the host nation, there is no rest for the weary. Second-round action will get underway on Wednesday, with both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal taking the court. A throng of Aussies including Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios will also be looking for more success.

Second seed Roger Federer led fellow tennis elites Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray into the second round of the Australian Open on Monday's opening day with a crushing 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 defeat of Lu Yen-Hsun. The Swiss followed on nicely from his ATP title eight days ago in Brisbane. Federer, 33, is bidding to become the second man in history to win five Melbourne singles titles.
The saddest news to come on the eve of the Australian Open was that Juan Martin del Potro, was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open because the wrist problems that had plagued him for much of the last few years hadn’t cleared up sufficiently for him to consider risking the possible rigors of a best of five sets Grand Slam event.
Nick Kyrgios was the most featured man in Melbourne on Day One of the Australian Open. His face featured on the front page of the top selling Herald Sun newspaper and his image is integral to several marketing campaigns.

G'day from Melbourne. The jetlagged team is finally getting it together. It's so great being down here. It feels so good. We always feel jittery till the tourney gets going. That first round match in any tourney is tough.
The Australian Open will begin with a bang on Monday in Melbourne. Both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are in action, with Nadal kicking things into gear during the day before Federer headlines the night session inside Rod Laver Arena. A local Aussie flavor will come in the form of rising stars Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
