The saddest news to come on the eve of the Australian Open was that Juan Martin del Potro, was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open because the wrist problems that had plagued him for much of the last few years hadn’t cleared up sufficiently for him to consider risking the possible rigors of a best of five sets Grand Slam event.

A day after Melbournian pessimism reigned over the Australian Open hopes of Nick Kyrgios, the player’s coach Todd Larkham maintained things aren’t quite so bad as his player maintained. Kyrgios underwent a day of scans and examinations to his injured back and leg after losing to Jerzy Janowicz in the first round of the Apia International in Sydney.
Nick Kyrgios joined fellow Aussies Sam Groth, Marinko Matosevic and Pat Cash at the Apia International Sydney players’ party before getting down to business on the tennis court. Juan Martin del Potro, Fabio Fognini, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Eric Butorac were some of the other players in attendance.

Nick Kyrgios is reported to be ‘shattered’ after his hopes of playing the Australian Open were plunged into doubt after injuring both his left knee and back in Sydney’s Apia International.
