I decided to try to write an article on how important the tournaments are the next 3 weeks and really the next 6 weeks including the US Open, but I felt the best way to illustrate that was to show how important these events have been to the Big Four: Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray.
On Tuesday, seeded players went 5-1 at the bet-at-home Open and were one point away from going 6-0. To say the tide turned on Wednesday would be an understatement.
Rafael Nadal will return to London this November in an attempt to capture his first career season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals title. Nadal joins three-time champion Novak Djokovic as the first two singles players to qualify for this year’s season finale, to be held at The O2 from 9-16 November.
The Western & Southern Open announced on Monday its 2014 player field. As a mandatory Masters 1000 event on the ATP World Tour, every one of the top 43 men in the rankings is signed up. The top 39 women are all on the entry list for what is a Premier 5 WTA tournament.
Tennis Canada announced Monday the official player acceptance list for the 2014 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto.
The most important and immediate benefit of Novak Djokovic's performance at Wimbledon on Sunday was his seventh Grand Slam title and second at the All-England Club. With the win, though, comes another accomplishment: Djokovic will be back in the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings on Monday.
Friday at the All-England Club could have been a natural passing of the torch, with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both going up against 23-year-old challengers. Instead, the Wimbledon final will feature a familiar matchup between Federer and Djokovic.
Only one champion remains in the women’s draw as two Czech lefties Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova will face each other in the semi-final. Kvitova owns the head to head 5-0 but they have had some humdinger of matches.
Most of the buzz in the tennis world on this last Wednesday of Wimbledon is about the men who have bowed out in the last few days. Great Britain’s hopes for a repeat of last year have been dashed. The man who was a winner then was the first British champ in 77 years.
Three of the top four seeds still have a chance to reach the Wimbledon semifinals as they take the court on Wednesday at the All-England Club. Rafael Nadal is the only exception, while Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Roger Federer are still alive and kicking. They will be back in action for what is an intriguing quarterfinal schedule.
Wimbledon passes on announcements with an aura of grandeur that often outstrips the issue itself. The second Tuesday though, brought about a communiqué that outlined a sad statistic, at least where US players are concerned. This is the first time since 1911 that no Americans remain in competition in either the women or men’s side of the draws.
Within minutes of the shock announcement that Andy Murray had chosen Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach, Andrei Chesnokov was having microphones stuck under his nose in the Players Lounge at Roland Garros.
