Rafael Nadal and a whole host of other seeds are out, but the third-round schedule at the Shanghai Rolex Masters is still an intriguing one. A showdown between Andy Murray and David Ferrer is among the eight matches on Thursday, while Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are also aiming for spots in the quarterfinals.
The new International Premier Tennis League moves closer by the day and its’ critics grow ever more agitated that the already too short off season will effectively be made even shorter. However Chris Kermode, the ATP World Tour’s executive chairman and president, doesn’t put it top of his current concerns, and said: “It's just very light entertainment.”
Andy Murray secured an efficient 6-1, 7-5 start as Scot tries to improve his status in the race for a spot in next month's ATP season-ending finals in London. Murray stands outside the sweet spot in the chase for the eight-man competition from November 9, currently ninth.

That was Tomas Berdych's analysis of Novak Djokovic following the Serb's ruthless performance in a 6-0, 6-2 beatdown in Sunday's China Open final.
23-0. Five finals. Four titles and counting. That's Novak Djokovic's record in Beijing. He said after this match that it was a lot of work to win most of the points, but still, he won them. He'll be going for his fifth title here on Sunday. And he's improving his chances for the year-end #1, although that isn't sure yet.
Rafael Nadal's comeback to tennis following a three-month layoff due to wrist problems ended abruptly on Friday, with a quarterfinal loss to Martin Klizan at the China Open. Klizan pulled off a 6-7(7), 6-4 , 6-3 upset after two hours and 37 minutes. The Slovak is joined in the semis by Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Tomas Berdych.
Andy Murray was due to maintain a demanding schedule in the Far East today when he faced current US Open champion Marin Cilic in the China Open in Beijing. And the Scot who was triumphant in New York two years ago before becoming also the Wimbledon champion maintains the current swing through Asia is the most demanding in tennis.

The two U.S. Open finalists are having no trouble where they left off in New York. Champion Marin Cilic is through to the China Open quarterfinals and runner-up Kei Nishikori has advanced to the last eight in Tokyo. Cilic took care of Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday, while Nishikori got past Donald Young 6-4, 7-6(4) in his quarterfinal match.

Novak Djokovic extended his perfect record at the China Open to 21-0 by defeating Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon. Djokovic, who is looking to win a fifth title in Beijing, needed one hour and 25 minutes to reach the quarterfinals. He is joined there by John Isner, a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) winner over Tommy Robredo.
Rafael Nadal's singles comeback got off to a perfect start on Tuesday afternoon at the China Open. Nadal, who had been out of action for three months since Wimbledon due to a wrist injury, crushed Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-0 in the first round. The Spaniard needed just one hour and 18 minutes to advance.
Andy Murray won his first singles title since winning Wimbledon 15 months ago. The win did little to alter his position of being an unlikely outsider to the world’s top ten but winning the Shenzhen Open after saving five match points against Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo did wonders for the Scot’s flagging morale.
Injured Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the exhibition International Premier Tennis League competition in Asia with his right wrist injury apparently still bothering him. The one-time No. 1 has not played since losing in the Wimbledon fourth round.
