There is something in the air… could it be that the Aussies are about to turn a corner in their tennis fortunes since the glory days of Lleyton Hewitt, Pat Rafter, Mark Philippousis and even Pat Cash?
What happened? Well ok maybe we’re being a teeny bit sensationalist, of course by now we know what happened. The rock solid favourite for the title exited stage left from the first Slam of the year.
Well thank heavens for that chink in the clouds, a return to the norm … we don’t mind admitting we were properly exhausted after all the drama of Day Three at the Australian Open, and Day Four was a little happier. OK well maybe not for eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki.
There was something wrong with Roger Federer's hand in this match. At the time, at least, no one had a guess as to what -- perhaps an insect bite or a blister. It made things difficult early on, but obviously he got over it! He leaves Simone Bolelli around the #48 ranking he came in with.
Second seed Roger Federer led fellow tennis elites Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray into the second round of the Australian Open on Monday's opening day with a crushing 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 defeat of Lu Yen-Hsun. The Swiss followed on nicely from his ATP title eight days ago in Brisbane. Federer, 33, is bidding to become the second man in history to win five Melbourne singles titles.
The bottom quarter of the men's singles draw at the Australian Open looks like rough one. You might call it the giant-killer section. Tommy Robredo upset Roger Federer at the 2013 U.S. Open, Jeremy Chardy beat Federer last spring, Dustin Brown ousted Rafael Nadal from Halle last summer, Borna Coric and Martin Klizan took advantage of Nadal’s fall struggles...
Roger Federer and Andy Murray, who have faced each other three times at the Australian Open, could collide in the quarterfinals for a second straight year. That much was confirmed on Friday when the draw ceremony was held at Melbourne Park.
The upcoming Davis Cup tie between Britain and the United States in Glasgow could see a unique doubles confrontation with the Murray brothers taking on the Bryan twins on day two of competition. As always the Bryans will be an automatic part of American captain Jim Courier’s selection for the rubber between the two founding nations of this historic competition.

On the day that the Aegon Championships launches its new Priority Ticket Membership (at 10am), the British No.1 Andy Murray and the tournament’s defending champion Grigor Dimitrov have both committed to return to The Queen’s Club in London, 15-21 June.
Rafael Nadal has thrown grave doubts over his participation in the Australian Open after two humiliating performances that have demonstrated he is functioning well below 100% fitness with the year’s first Grand Slam tournament just 11 days away.

The last tournament of 2014 ended with a withdrawal from the final (Roger Federer, who had been scheduled to play Novak Djokovic at the World Tour Finals). Now the first event of 2015--albeit an exhibition--has concluded in the same fashion.
