Venus Williams did not linger after winning the Dubai Duty Free Championships for a third time, so becoming only the second player in history after Justine Henin to rack up so many wins in the big Middle Eastern event.
This clearly wasn't a case of Alize Cornet not caring. At 2-5 down in the first set, she was sobbing as she talked to her coach. But what could either of them do? Cornet can't hope to out-hit Venus Williams; all she could do was try to get balls back.

Serena Williams admits that if it had been her suffering with Sjogren’s Syndrome rather than big sister Venus, she would have almost certainly retired from top flight tennis, or at best just played doubles.

Ana Ivanovic emerged as the only winning seed on the day as the No. 9 advanced into the second round when Daniela Hantuchova retired injured trailing 7-5, 1-0. A similar fate befell Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova as the tenth seed was unable to continue at 5-5 against Russian cancer survivor Alisa Kleybanova.

At least it looks as if the Russians will soon be out of their misery. As soon as the teams were announced, it was obvious that the Russians would be overmatched by Australia, but the actual contest was more sad than anything else.
