Serena Williams has reluctantly withdrawn from the Australian Open. “After competing in Abu Dhabi I realized that although I am super close, I’m not where I personally want to be,” Williams said.
It was a triumphant appearance for 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams in Abu Dhabi even though she didn’t win a match.
Serena Williams will ring in her return before the New Year begins. The 23-time Grand Slam champion will play reigning Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in a December 30th exhibition at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.
It won't bring any ranking points. It will, though, bring an additional $250,000 to Rafael Nadal's bank account. But most importantly, this week's action at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship will give Nadal additional confidence heading into the 2016 ATP World Tour season.

A Mubadala World Tennis Championship final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray was by no means a foregone conclusion heading into Friday in Abu Dhabi. But it sure felt that was as the two semifinals progressed. Prior to Djokovic's 6-1, 6-2 thrashing of Stan Wawrinka, Murray rolled over Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-0.
