Luxembourg

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki beat hometown player Mandy Minella 6-3, 7-6(2) to lead the tournament elite into the second round. Second-seeded American Sloane Stephens put out former champion Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-3 while Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki, seeded third, beat young London-based Croatian Donna Vekic 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. Noted tweeter Wozniacki has had to spend energy denying that she and golfer boyfriend Rory McIlroy are finished, saying she will now keep her private life private and off of social media.

Stephens lost a 3-1 lead in the opening set and also dropped eight straight games in the second before pulling out victory against 256th ranked Swiss who once regularly played at the WTA level before injuries set in. “It was tough – obviously playing a player I had never played before, or even seen play, was a little bit tricky,” said Stephens. “But I thought I played pretty good overall, so I was happy to get the win.”

Bacsinszky won Luxembourg in 2009 and once ranked 37th on the WTA; she was playing her first main draw match in a year. Stephens next faces Austrian Yvonne Meusburger, a winner over Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-2. Poland’s Katarzyna Piter upset fourth seed Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 6-2 while Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland knocked out sixth seed Mona Barthel in a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) comeback. There were wins for Czech Karolina Pliskova and Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei.

Moscow

Russians split the difference as Elena Vesnina reached the second round over Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova 6-1, 6-2 while fifth seed Carla Suarez Navarro stopped Moscow’s Vera Dushevina 6-4, 6-3. Daniela Hantuchova moved through over Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-1, 6-2. Swede Sofia Arvidsson took a victory as did Serb Vesna Dolonc, who upset ninth seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Czech Klara Zakopalova beat Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-4, 6-3 and Magdalena Rybarikova defeated Ksenia Pervak 7-5, 6-2.
