Luxembourg

Czech fifth seed Lucie Safarova began her week with a win over China’s Peng Shuai 7-5, 6-4 while Serb Bojana Jovanovski, seeded eighth, beat former French Open winner Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 6-3. There we also wins for Monica Niculescu over fellow Romanian Alexandra Cadantu 7-5, 6-4 and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, who put out Heather Watson 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 to end a poor season of illness and poor form for the Brit.

Moscow

Double grand slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeded eighth, moved into the second round of the joint ATP-WTA event over Lesia Tsurenko 7-5, 6-2, winning five straight games in the second set on her way to victory. Kuznetsova won her last title three years ago and is hungry for success. “I haven’t been playing here for a couple of years, but this year I really want to play my best here. I was nervous at the beginning of the match.”

German Angelique Kerber withdrew injured (abdominal strain) after winning last week in Linz under controversial tournament entry circumstances and therefore qualified for the WTA Championships next week. Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat France’s Caroline Garcia 6-0, 6-3, while another Russian also moved through. Alisa Kleybanova, who successfully fought cancer, defeated Varvara Lepchenko 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4.

****** EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ******

* Two matches played, two Czech winners in Vienna: #5 Stepanek, #8 Rosol both win straight set matches lasting 19 games

* Newcomer Khachanov justified Moscow wildcard with upset of Ramos

* #7 seed Sousa falls to Stakhovsky, likely to lose Top Fifty ranking

* Joachim Johansson qualifies for Stockholm but insists it’s a one-time thing

* Zopp forced to retire again; Paire, Sijsling win

****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Moscow

Argentine sixth seed Horacio Zeballos began a lightly scheduled opening day as beating Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 but Joao Sousa, surprise champion a fortnight ago in Kuala Lumpur, lost at the first hurdle as seventh seed, going out to Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-3. Russian Karen Khachanov advanced over Albert Ramos of Spain 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Richard Gasquet is the only name player of note at the event, with the Frenchman desperate to improve his standing for a place at the year-end championships next month after losing in the Shanghai first round last week.

Stockholm

Another indoor event got underway gradually, with French sixth seed Benoit Paire opening with a defeat of Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 6-4. Dutchman Igor Sijsling defeated German Tobias Kamke 6-4, 6-2 while Spaniard Pablo Carreno advanced when Juergen Zopp retired injured at 5-5. Milos Raonic took a wild card into the field as he bids for a place in the year-end championships. Swede Joachim Johansson, who played his last match in 2009 and once stood inside the top 10, came out of the blue and qualified in his hometown .

Vienna

Czech seeds tuned up for November’s Davis Cup final against Serbia, with Radek Stepanek and Lukas Rosol both posting first-round wins. The only matches on opening day became almost exact duplicates, with each lasting 65 minutes. Radek Stepanek, playing the event for the sixth time, defeated Austrian wild card Martin Fischer. Davis teammate Lukas Rosol, seeded eighth, reversed that shoreline to send out Jesse Huta Galung 6-3, 7-5, hammering 13 aces in his winning start.

Rosol won his first match at the tournament after going out in his only previous appearance as a qualifier in 2009. The man who beat Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, 2012, improved to 20-25 on the season.

The Vienna week indoors will be crucial for the season-ending hopes of France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who plays as top seed standing provisional ninth in the eight-man field for the year-ender. But due to the injury absence of Andy Murray (back surgery) in London next month, Tsonga is currently in a good position for the World Tour Finals.

Battling him for a place in the field with four spots still open are the Swiss pair of Stanislas Wawrinka, Roger Federer, fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Canadian Milos Raonic, who stands just 240 points behind Tsonga. Tsonga, a semi-finalist at the weekend against Novak Djokovic in Shanghai, is putting his fragile knee to a test as he competes in his fourth event over the last five weeks.
