Raonic Tries To Win A Spot In London’s Draw

Canadian Milos Raonic is stepping up his effort to win a place in the season-ending World Tour Finals, with the Canadian working to build upon the winning momentum he established by lifting the Bangkok title at the weekend.

The current Asian tour could turn into a gold mine of points for the world No. 10 who stands provisional 11th behind Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the chase to the eight-man November event in London.

Raonic started his run to glory by playing the Montreal Masters final at home in August against Rafael Nadal. He lost a marathon five-setter to Gasquet at the US Open before playing a Davis Cup semi-final for Canada against Serbia. He then turned his attention to Asia and his drive to become the first form his nation to book into the year-ender in singles.

“I’ve done a lot of great things since playing Montreal,” he said, “I’ve been gaining confidence and insight into what I need to do to keep winning. I need to carry over in Tokyo what I’ve been doing so far. If I can keep up that momentum from Bangkok I can put myself in a good position to win more matches.”

Raonic is defending finalist points from Tokyo, 2012, when he lost to Kei Nishikori in an historic day for the hosts. Now, Raonic wants to make some history of his own: “London has always been a goal but it has always seemed some distance away,

“But I hope things are coming together right now for me. I’m only focusing match by match. But there are a lot of points on offer and I hope to keep earning them.” Raonic opens against Japanese competition in Tokyo as he plays Go Soeda, a wild card.
