Allaster: Women Would Be Willing To Play Best 3 Out Of 5

WTA CEO Stacey Allaster says that the women players are prepared to play the best of five sets at the Grand Slams, even though some of the tour’s leading players have said in the past that they would prefer not to.

Maria Sharapova has said as much, as has Serena Williams, even though neither of them were polled recently. The tireless Caroline Wozniacki has said that she would be willing to go three out of five.

Allaster made the comments in reference to Andy Murray’s recent statement that even though he supports equal prize money, that ” either the men go three sets or the women go five sets “I think that’s more what the guys tend to complain about rather than the equal prize money itself.”

Allaster told AFP that the WTA is willing to go the distance. “Ready, willing and able — all you have to do is ask us,” she said.

The WTA Championships played best-of-five finals from 1984–1998, but went back to two out of three in 1993.

Allaster added that if the Slams were to initiate the change, the length of the sessions at the Grand Slams would increase. “It would take a lot longer to have our matches if it were five sets,” Allaster said.
