TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS

St. Petersburg

Singles – Second Round: M Przysiezny def. (1) F Fognini 6-3 5-3, retired (right foot)

Michal Przysiezny really does seem to be experiencing some sort of post-Davis Cup breakthrough. But this is tough news for Fabio Fognini, who loses finalist points; he will fall from #17 to #19.

Singles – Second Round: (4) D Tursunov def. (Q) K Kravchuk 6-3 6-0

A big chance for Dmitry Tursunov. So far, he is merely defending points — he made the semifinal last year — but he is the top seed left in the draw.

Singles – Second Round: (6) E Gulbis def. J Zopp 6-3 1-6 6-3

We’d have to call that a Gulbisian score…. But Ernests Gulbis is starting to add points; this will likely gain him a ranking spot.

Singles – Second Round: (7) L Rosol def. (WC) K Khachanov 6-4 6-4

With this, Lukas Rosol starts to add points, but he needs to win one more to really start rising.

Singles – Second Round: J Sousa def. S Stakhovsky 3-6 6-4 6-0

By the looks of things, Davis Cup fatigue has finally caught up with Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Singles – Second Round: R Bautista Agut def. E Donskoy 2-6 6-1 7-6(7-5)

This was the late match — and it was very late, two and a half hours. Presumably the organizers were hoping the locals would have some success. Their main success was in wearing out Roberto Bautista Agut; he will have a tough task tomorrow!

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Marrero/Verdasco def. (WC) Baluda/Kravchuk 6-4 7-6(10-8)

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Karatsev/Tursunov def. (3) Bracciali/Dlouhy 6-1 6-2

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Groth/Guccione def. (4) Cermak/Polasek 6-3 3-6 10-4

Metz

Singles – Second Round: (2) G Simon def. K de Schepper 6-2 6-3

No points yet for Gilles Simon, but as with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the big news is that he’s playing and playing well.

Singles – Second Round: N Mahut def. (3) A Seppi 6-4 6-4

This was Andreas Seppi’s first match of the event, so maybe he wasn’t ready for the surface transition. But he was last year’s finalist, so this will cost him some points. He had a lot in his nineteenth event, so he will not fall more than one place and may even stay at #22.

Singles – Second Round: C Berlocq def. (4) P Kohlschreiber 6-7(7-9) 7-6(7-5) 2-1, retired (right knee)

Philipp Kohlschreiber struggled out there for two hours before calling it quits. This means he won’t rise above #25, although the only way he can fall is if Sam Querrey takes the title.

Singles – Second Round: (8) F Mayer def. L Lacko 6-3 6-2

You’d think this was a German event based on the results — Florian Mayer became the second German in the quarterfinal. No points for Mayer yet, though.

Singles – Second Round: B Becker def. (WC) A Olivetti 6-7(6-8) 6-3 6-1

The score perhaps gives a false impression of closeness here; Benjamin Becker faced only one break point, and he saved it. He really does like fast surfaces….

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin def. Monroe/Stadler 6-3 6-2

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Hanley/Sa def. (2) Knowle/Melo 6-3 6-2

More post-Davis Cup jinx, perhaps — Knowle and Melo were both on losing teams.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Mahut/Tsonga def. (4) Begemann/Emmrich 7-6(13-11) 7-5

If Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was worried about his match toughness, he’s should be reassured by the amount of court time he’s getting — this took more than an hour and three-quarters.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Brunstom/Klaasen def. Erlich/A Ram 6-4 6-4
