TODAY’S WOMEN’S NEWS

Seoul

Singles – Second Round: (3) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova def. Ye-Ra Lee 6-4 6-1

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is just starting to add points, but one more win would probably put her in the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Irina-Camelia Begu def. (6) Julia Goerges 6-4 6-0

That makes it five seeds out — and the second round isn’t even over! Julia Goerges was’t defending anything, so she will stay a little above #50.

Singles – Second Round: Vera Dushevina def. (8) Annika Beck 6-3 7-5

Unlike her countrywoman Goerges, Annika Beck was defending substantial points; she will fall below #55.

Singles – Second Round: Lara Arruabarrena def. Alexandra Dulgheru 6-1 3-6 6-4

Alexandra Dulgheru shows occasional flashes of her pre-injury form, but she can’t seem to keep it up for more than a match or two. It’s turning into a very slow comeback.

Singles – Second Round: Francesca Schiavone def. Virginie Razzano 7-6(7-5) 3-6 6-3

Francesca Schiavone is now just one win away from a return to the Top Fifty. But she will probably have to face #2 seed Maria Kirilenko next.

Doubles – First Round: C Chan/Xu def. (2) Date-Krumm/Goerges 6-3 6-2

Doubles – First Round: (3) Aoyama/Moulton-Levy def. Hong/Lee 6-3 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Beygelzimer/Piter def. Han/Kapshay 6-3 6-0

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Husarova/Parra Santonja def. Arruabarrena/Dulgheru 7-5 6-4

Guangzhou

Singles – Second Round: (2) Alize Cornet def. Karolina Pliskova 7-6(7-4) 6-0

Alize Cornet has now defended her points and will rise about one ranking spot for each additional win she earns here.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Laura Robson def. Saisai Zheng 6-4 7-6(7-4)

This was not at all easy; Laura Robson was out there for almost exactly two hours. But she earns enough points to absolutely clinch her Top Forty spot. She will need two more wins to stay above #35, however.

Singles – Second Round: Johanna Konta def. (4) Shuai Peng 6-1 6-3

It’s results like this that really make us wonder sometimes about Peng Shuai’s motivation. She loses quarterfinal points, but it won’t affect her ranking much.

Singles – Second Round: Shuai Zhang def. (6) Su-Wei Hsieh 6-2 6-2

This result, on the other hand, hurts a lot. Hsieh Su-Wei was last year’s champion, so she falls from #42 to around #60.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Monica Puig def. Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 6-2

Monica Puig hasn’t moved in the rankings yet, but if she wins her next match, she will reach the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: Jie Zheng def. Timea Babos 7-5 7-6(7-1)

Zheng Jie rises very slightly, to around #55; she is now about sixty points away from a return to the Top Sixty.

Singles – Second Round: Yvonne Meusburger def. Vesna Dolonc 2-6 6-2 6-4

This is pretty typical of Vesna Dolonc lately: Post an upset (in this case, over Urszula Radwanska), then lose the relatively easy match. Which is why she is still near the bottom of the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: Vania King def. Bojana Jovanovski 6-4 0-6 6-4

Bojana Jovanovski’s winning streak ends at six, leaving her still short of the Top Forty.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Babos/Govortsova def. Shvedova/Zhang 6-3 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) King/Voskoboeva def. Glushko/Rodionova 6-4 6-0

Last year’s Tashkent champion lost in the second round this year.

Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)

Loser: Begu, ranking increased 46%.

Ranking Notes

For a week with nothing but International events, we had some pretty big moves — but they were all reasonable moves. Our four biggest movers were all either champions or finalists: Tashkent champion Jovanovski rose 29%, finalist Govortsova rose 26%, Quebec City champion Lucie Safarova rose 25% (to #36), and finalist Marina Erakovic rose 19% (to #55). No one else rose more than 15%.

Our biggest losers were (non)-defending champions and finalists: Tashkent 2012 champion Begu, down 46%. Last year’s Quebec City champion Kirsten Flipkens, down 43% (to #20). Tashkent finalist Donna Vekic, down 27% (to #79). Quebec City finalist Lucie Hradecka fell 25%, but she was already out of the Top Hundred. Quebec semifinalist Kristina Mladenovic also lost 25%, to #50; no one else fell more than 10%.

Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”

These are subjective picks!

Jovanovski had the biggest move and won a title. She’s a pretty good choice.
