Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is due to step onto a court for the first time since Wimbledon when he returns from the knee injury which has sidelined him for almost three months. The ATP No. 8 will also be back after sacking his Australian coach Roger Rasheed this month after a year of working together.

Part of the reason had to be the logistics required to deal with the Adelaide-based coach by the Swiss-based player. Tsonga will make his fresh start with only weeks to go in the ATP season at the Moselle Open in Metz in his native France which begins September 16.

“He’s chosen to return indoors at Metz because the end of the season is played on this surface,” said an official. “He has points to defend and the Masters in his sights. He’s on top form.”

Tsonga is still in with a chance for a place in the eight-man season-ending event in London next November, but will need a run of good results as he duels with rivals including sixth-ranked Roger Federer, Juan Del Potro, Swiss Stan Wawrinka and his French compatriot Richard Gasquet, a US Open semi-finalist.

Tsonga owns two titles at the event in northeast France. He is due to make a return along with compatriot Gilles Simon, who missed the US Open with illness and is playing on a wildcard entry.
