Andy Murray may be able to recover quickly from his US Open quarter-final disappointment after being nominated for the 2013 Scottish Fashion Icon Award. The proposal of the formerly disheveled world NO. 3 might say more about the state of Scottish fashion than anything about Murray, who admittedly did manage to scrub up well for the Wimbledon ball in July after he became the first British man to win the home honor in 77 years.
Among the other nominees are Scottish Hollywood stars and musicians, including actor Gerard Butler. There are a total of 13 noted Scots from film, television, music, sport and modeling. The winner will be named – in London – on October 9.
Organizers are working to spin the event as a major coup, with one saying: “We are huge fans of Andy Murray, who has literally had a fashion make-over in the last 18 months, and given his win at Wimbledon this year and his excellent sartorial choices, he very much deserves to be in there. “It’s wonderful to have so many stylish Scots working in the world of sports, acting, singing and entertainment and we applaud their own unique identity.”
Murray has never been known for his fashion sense and doesn’t have enough VIP sponsors to ever really have to get kitted out in suits like Roger Federer. His usual wardrobe seems to be whatever is hanging on the bedside chair by way of adidas tennis gear and jeans plus trainers for the moments off court. he also took some criticism this season during his period of wearing skin-tight “Spiderman” shirts before his sponsor changed the look after Wimbledon.
