Singles – Third Round: (1) N Djokovic def. (Q) D Goffin 6-2 6-0
There isn’t much to say except that Novak Djokovic adds more insurance points.
Singles – Third Round: (2) A Murray def. J Benneteau 6-2 6-2
Speaking of insurance points, Andy Murray also adds some, but not enough to matter; Rafael Nadal can still pass him with a title. Julian Benneteau will be around #35, which probably means no U. S. Open seed.
Singles – Third Round: (Q) D Tursunov def. (3) D Ferrer 6-2 6-4
At least Nadal doesn’t have to worry about David Ferrer any more. Ferrer continues to struggle badly on hardcourt, and will not regain the #3 ranking any time soon. Dmitry Tursunov is up to #35; he’ll be seeded in New York if he can win his next match.
Singles – Third Round: (4) R Nadal def. G Dimitrov 6-2 5-7 6-2
As we said above, Rafael Nadal has now clinched at least the #3 spot, with a chance to go higher — although he should have finished a lot earlier; he blew a break lead in the second set. Grigor Dimitrov will be within one spot of the #29 ranking he came in with.
Singles – Third Round: (5) R Federer def. (11) T Haas 1-6 7-5 6-3
Once again with the tough matches for Roger Federer. And he still needs more to keep the #5 ranking. He leaves Tommy Haas probably #13 — and closes the Top Ten; the last three spots will be #8 Tsonga, #9 Gasquet, #10 Wawrinka,
Singles – Third Round: (6) T Berdych def. T Robredo 6-3 6-0
Roger Federer had better watch out if Tomas Berdych keeps playing like this. Of course, Berdych usually doesn’t…. Still, he blocks Tommy Robredo’s Top Twenty quest.
Singles – Third Round: (7) J del Potro def. F Lopez 6-4 1-6 6-4
Feliciano Lopez loses his chance to make the Top 25.
Singles – Third Round: J Isner def. (12) M Raonic 7-6(7-5) 6-4
As you might have observed above, Milos Raonic is out of the Top Ten; he’ll be #11. But we once again have an American in the Top Twenty; John Isner should rise to at least #20 and probably #19.
Doubles – Second Round: (4) Paes/Stepanek def. Janowicz/Kubot 6-3 6-4
Doubles – Second Round: Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. (5) Qureshi/Rojer 6-3 7-6(7-3)
What a goofy year for Fyrstenberg/Matkowski. When they were seeded, they played very poorly. Now that they’re unseeded, they’re playing very well.
Doubles – Second Round: (WC) Blake/Johnson def. (7) Benneteau/Zimonjic 6-1 6-4
Doubles – Quarterfinal: S Gonzalez/Lipsky def. (3) Peya/Soares 6-2 4-6 16-14
No sooner do Peya/Soares earn the #2 U. S. Open seed than this happens….
This Week’s Movers — Men
Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.

Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)
Loser: Mardy Fish — Dropped 51 places, from #78 to #129
Not only did Fish lose quarterfinalist points from Canada, he’ll be losing more this week.
Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)
Loser: Fish, ranking increased 65%.
Ranking Notes
Maybe we should try to license Garrison Keillor’s monologues and start every ATP rankings report with “It was a quiet week on the ATP.” Even with a Masters on the schedule, only one player (Pospisil) rose more than 25%. Four others rose between 20% and 25%: Nadal (25%), Matosevic (24%), Canadian finalist Milos Raonic (23%, to #10), and Jerzy Janowicz (22%, to a career-high #14). Nikolay Davydenko’s 19% move (to #38) was next.
On the down side, Fish fell 65%, David Ferrer gave up 33% (to #4), Steve Johnson lost 28% (to #128), Marcel Granollers slipped 28% (to #46), Richard Gasquet fell 22% (to #11), and Marin Cilic lost 20% (to #18). No one else fell as much as 14%.
Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”
These are subjective picks!
Pospisil has it all: Biggest move, best career result, and career high. And he’s finally building on the talent he started to show three years ago.
