Cincinnati

Singles – Second Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Eugenie Bouchard 4-6 6-2 6-2

This was genuinely tough, but no one out-toughs Serena Williams….

Singles – Second Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 6-0

Varvara Lepchenko rises to perhaps #35, but it doesn’t look as if she will get a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Sara Errani def. Polona Hercog 6-4 5-7 6-4

Every point Sara Errani earns here improves her chances of rising to #5, but what a tough way to start!

Singles – Second Round: (7) Petra Kvitova def. Marina Erakovic 6-4 6-7(7-9) 6-3

Petra Kvitova needs at least one more win to rise above #9; it might be more.

Singles – Second Round: Simona Halep def. (7) Marion Bartoli 3-6 6-4 6-1

Not much movement yet for Simona Halep, but she costs Marion Bartoli the chance to rise above #7. That’s good news for defending champion Li Na, who has now clinched at least the #6 ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (9) Angelique Kerber def. Alisa Kleybanova 7-6(7-3) 6-2

Angelique Kerber is a mere #10 in safe points — and could fall lower.

Singles – Second Round: (10) Caroline Wozniacki def. Monica Niculescu 6-4 6-3

This was one of the longest 6-4 first sets in recent memory — an hour and a quarter. And Caroline Wozniacki still needs one more win to earn something that counts!

Singles – Second Round: (11) Samantha Stosur def. Jamie Hampton 6-3 7-6(7-3)

The best Jamie Hampton can hope for, now, is #25, but at least she’ll have a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – Second Round: (12) Roberta Vinci def. Andrea Petkovic 6-4 6-7(7-9) 6-3

Andrea Petkovic loses her Top Forty chance, but she offers more evidence that she is finally back in form. Roberta Vinci will face her doubles partner Sara Errani next — always an interesting meeting.

Singles – Second Round: 14) Jelena Jankovic def. Ekaterina Makarova 2-6 6-3 6-3

Ekaterina Makarova will fall just below the Top 25.

Singles – Second Round: Mona Barthel def. (16) Maria Kirilenko 6-4 6-4

This might make Mona Barthel Top Thirty. It certainly means no return to the Top Fifteen for Maria Kirilenko.

Singles – Second Round: Elena Vesnina def. Venus Williams 6-2 5-7 6-2

Elena Vesnina is often frustrating in that she doesn’t use her talents to their greatest extent. But rarely is she as visibly a cause of frustration as in this match. Venus Williams smashed a racquet, threw a racquet, and frankly did a good impression of an upset Serena. Hard to blame her; the loss drops Venus out of the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: Magdalena Rybarikova def. Alize Cornet 3-6 7-5 7-5

It looks as if this will do it: Magdalena Rybarikova will be seeded at the U. S. Open.

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Hantuchova/Hingis 6-4 6-4

Somehow, Hingis/Hantuchova have to find a way to win a second round match. Granted, they faced the toughest team out there. But the Italians had to be very tired.

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Makarova/Vesnina def. King/Kleybanova 6-2 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: .(3) Hsieh/Peng def. Dushevina/Soler-Espinosa 6-1 6-1

Doubles – Second Round: Kerber/Petkovic def. (4) Hlavackova/Raymond 6-3 4-6 11-9

Lisa Raymond has a history of slow starts with new partners, and this appears to be no exception.

Doubles – Second Round: (6) Groenefeld/Peschke def. Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 6-2 6-1

Doubles – Second Round: Goerges/Zahlavova Strycova def. Flipkens/Kvitova walkover

Doubles – Second Round: Huber/Llagostera Vives def. Date-Krumm/Parra Santonja 7-6(7-2) 6-7(7-9) 10-4
