Cincinnati
Roger Federer began his late tune-up for the US open by winning his opening match 6-3, 7-6(7) over good friend Philipp Kohlschreiber as his back pain issues from last month faded away. The five-time champion is looking for matches prior to the US open. The fifth-ranked Swiss was playing the tournament for the 13th time, improving his record to 31-10 this season. He recovered from a break down in the second set to take the victory.
Spain’s third seed David Ferrer booked a spot in the third round after a slow start to his pre-US Open hard court campaign a week ago in Canada. The No. 4 wasted a match point but broke back a game later to dismiss US player Ryan Harrison 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4 in a two-and three-quarter-hour struggle. The Spanish third seed had 19 break point chances against his opponent but was only able to convert on three of them.
He was joined as a second-round winner by Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Bryan Baker of the US 6-3, 6-2.In first-round action, seeds split the difference with two wins and two opening defeats.
Swiss No. 9 Stanislas Wawrinka was untroubled by Italy’s Andreas Seppi, with a 6-3, 6-4 win while German 11th seed Tommy Haas did the same in a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Kevin Anderson after a poor start north of the border. There were defeats for Japan’s number 10 Kei Nishikori, eliminated 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) by Feliciano Lopez. Canadian Vasek Pospisil benefited as French 15th seed Gilles Simon quit in a 6-2, 1-1 loss due to hip problems.
Canadians doubled up for wins, with Montreal semi-finalist Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil both got wins. Raonic got a revenge win 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Jack Sock, who beat him last February in a Memphis opening match while Vasek Pospisil, now ranked a career-high 40th, advanced when French 15th seed Gilles Simon quit trailing 6-2, 1-1 with a hip injury. German 11th seed Tommy Haas stopped Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4.
Mikhail Youzhny set up a match with second seed Andy Murray as he beat Ernests Gulbis 7-5, 6-3 after the Latvian upset Murray in the Montreal third round. John Isner got a home win with a defeat of Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-4.
