It appears there will be no Top Fifteen spot for Sloane Stephens after all; we show her at #16.
Singles – Third Round: (4) Na Li def. (16) Ana Ivanovic 3-6 6-1 7-6(7-5)
Li Na stays ahead of Sara Errani in the contest for #5, but that is far from settled. Ana Ivanovic, despite losing, regains the status of #1 Serb.
Singles – Third Round: (5) Sara Errani def. Alize Cornet 7-5 7-6(7-3)
Sara Errani is a mere 35 points behind Li Na in the contest for #5. Whichever lasts longer gets it; ties go to Li. Alize Cornet will probably be #28.
Singles – Third Round: (6) Petra Kvitova def. (12) Samantha Stosur 6-3 6-3
Petra Kvitova ends Samantha Stosur’s winning streak with Stosur just short of the Top Ten.
Singles – Third Round: Magdalena Rybarikova def. (7) Marion Bartoli 7-6(7-5) 1-0, retired
A big, big stroke of luck for Magdalena Rybarikova, but still, it takes her to #33. That U. S. Open seed is looking ever more possible.

Wonder of wonders, it looks as if Caroline Wozniacki will stay safe in the Top Ten. At least, neither Samantha Stosur nor Roberta Vinci will pass her. That almost certainly means no new names in the Top Ten, and probably none in the Top Twenty.

Jelena Jankovic falls behind Ana Ivanovic, but at least she remains Top 15. Odds are that both Serbs will be seeded in the #13-#16 seeding block in New York.

Funny how Martina Hingis can look so good in the first round, then fizzle so fast. Does she need to work on her fitness?

Petra Kvitova has enough to defend that she is still only #9 in safe points, but this plus the next result make it effectively certain that she will stay Top Ten.
Singles – Second Round: Sorana Cirstea def. (9) Caroline Wozniacki 5-7 7-6 6-4
Bah. What is there to say? Caroline Wozniacki took Victoria Azarenka’s spot in the draw, so she had a bye and earns no points. She is still #10 in safe points, but that may not last….
Singles – Second Round: (12) Samantha Stosur def. Carla Suarez Navarro 1-6 6-2 6-3
Two more wins and Samantha Stosur will pass Wozniacki. She leaves Carla Suarez Navarro still #19.
Early Wednesday — already covered
Singles – Second Round: (4) Na Li def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1 6-4
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova might return to the Top Thirty, but this costs her the chance to clinch.

We show Klara Zakopalova at #33 — in other words, right on the brink of a U. S. Open seed. It’s going to be interesting to see how she does at Cincinnati.

Marion Bartoli now looks almost sure to return to #7, although there is no real chance of her going higher.
Singles – Second Round: (10) Roberta Vinci def. Ekaterina Makarova 6-0 6-4
Ekaterina Makarova remains stalled below the Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: Alize Cornet def. (11) Maria Kirilenko 7-5 7-5
Maria Kirilenko just fell to #16, and this is going to cost her at least one more ranking spot.

No move yet for Kirsten Flipkens, but she has a faint shot at making the Top Ten this week if she can win two more matches.

It’s just possible that one more win will make Sloane Stephens Top Fifteen. Mona Barthel is at #32, so she and Klara Zakopalova are fighting for that last U. S. Open seed.

Jelena Jankovic still has a shot to keep the status of #1 Serb, but…

…because Ana Ivanovic has a smaller sixteenth event score, Ivanovic now has a slight rankings lead over Jankovic. Whichever lasts longer will be Serbia’s #1, and will be assured a Top Fifteen spot; the loser may end up #16. Ties go to Ivanovic.
Singles – Second Round: Magdalena Rybarikova def. Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 6-2
Magdalena Rybarikova just keeps winning, we show her perhaps up to #36 — so she just might have a shot at a U. S. Open seed if she can add a few more points here or at Cincinnati. Varvara Lepchenko is down to #40, and of course can’t add points here, so her chances look very poor.

Makarova/Vesnina both crashed in singles, but it clearly isn’t affecting their doubles.

Tatishvili made the second round at the 2012 Olympics.

Loser: Maria Sharapova, ranking increased 1 place, 50%, from #2 to #3.
Azarenka’s gain is Sharapova’s loss.
Ranking Notes
This was Olympic week last year, so it is no great surprise that we had big moves. Azarenka, up 33%. Razzano, 30%. Petkovic, 22%. But the next-biggest move was a mere 15%, by Carlsbad winner Samantha Stosur, who rose from #13 to #11.
It was a crummy week to be Russian. Sharapova fell 50%. Olympic semifinalist Maria Kirilenko lost 33%, from #12 to #16. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova gave up 24%, to #31. Tatishvili, our first non-Russian downward mover, was next, with a 19% drop.
