Rafael Nadal goes into the first test of his knees since a Wimbledon first-round loss when the Spaniard faces Jesse Levine, who earned the first Canadian win of the week as he beat Xavier Malisse 6-4, 7-6(4) in Montreal.
But the world No. 4 has not been worrying about his start, just concentrating on quality practice on the hardcourts as he puts his knees under the pressure they are likely to face straight through the US Open in three weeks.
“I didn’t play a tournament for the last seven weeks so that’s not the perfect preparation for one of the most difficult tournaments in the world, where the best players are,” Nadal said by way of a defence of his strategy which included a restful holiday on his home island of Mallorca.”
His Montreal start will be his first on cement since Indian Wells in mid-march, when he beat Argentine Juan Del Potro for the Californian title.
“I arrived with a lot of time before the tournament, to be ready for the first round,” said Nadal, who has been in the Canadian city for almost a week. “I really enjoy being here. I’m just going to try my best in every practice to play well in the first round.”
Nadal should not be low on confidence despite Wimbledon after winning seven titles from nine events earlier in the season including an eighth French Open title. “What happened in the four months I’ve been able to compete this year was fantastic, but there’s still lots more to come and you have to be well prepared.”
