Spain’s 53rd-ranked Marcel Granollers spoiled the scenario for former Argentine champion Juan Monaco with a 0-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 fight back in the final, lifting his fourth career trophy – third on clay – in two and a quarter hours. The winner admitted it was tough going against the favorite, seeded second and the 2007 winner in the Austrian Alps.
“Today I was half on my way to the airport, but I kept on fighting and started to play better in the middle of the second set,” said Granollers, winner of his first ATP title in the two years since he won on clay at altitude in Gstaad. But until you lose the last point, you are still standing and I kept on going. I got probably more nervous than usual when I had to close the match at 5-3 in the third.
“It’s s normal to get that way in a final. I played very well after that and I did it. I came into this week playing well so I knew I could do something here.”
The win will vault the Barcelona player back into the ranking top 40 and makes him the sixth Spaniard after Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo, Feliciano Lopez and Albert Montanes to win a title in 2013.
Monaco called himself “disappointed to not have been able to come through today.
“The score never lies and I need to congratulate Marcel. Overall, this was a great week for me. If I can be in the final every week, I will sign immediately. When I think where I was at the beginning of the season this is great.”
Washington DC
American John Isner reached his second straight home final as he hammered over 29 aces in a 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4 defeat of 61st-ranked Russian Dmitry Tursunov. The North Carolina player showed that he works best in his comfort zone, with his record in North American standing 126-59 compared to a much more modest outsie in the “real” world, where he is 66-65.
Isner managed 22 winners in the first set of a semi-final interrupted in the second set for more than an hour by rain, but came back to earn his spot in the 15th final of his career. Isner becomes the first US finalist in Washington in four years, when Andy Roddick lost to Juan Del Potro. Isner is bidding for an eighth title and third of this season after home success in Houston and Atlanta.
Top seed Juan Del Potro survived a lengthy rain interruption to defeat 2012 finalist and third seed Tommy Haas 7-6(4), 6-3 in a post-midnight finish. Haas had the early lead with a break 4-1 when the weather moved in.
Upon return, the frustrated German lost four straight games to the Argentine who twice won the title.
Del Potro won his 13th straight match at the venue and know he faces a huge test against Isner’s momentum. “Against Isner, here in the United States, and with his serve, it’s going to be a really terrible match for me but I will try to return some serves and play my game. Being in the final means a lot to me.” Isner stands 0-3 against Del Potro.
