Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (6) Varvara Lepchenko 7-6(7-2) 3-6 6-3

Varvara Lepchenko remains below #35 — it appears she’ll be #37.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Hantuchova/Raymond def. Muhammed/Will 6-3 5-7 14-12

Lisa Raymond has a history of struggling with new partners. It appears that is still true.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) H Chan/Dushevina def. Govortsova/Kudryavtseva 1-6 6-3 10-5

Saturday

Singles – Semifinal: (3) Dominika Cibulkova def. (5) Sorana Cirstea 6-4 6-0

This was one of those strange matches that was incredibly close for seven games, then turned into a blowout. It doesn’t matter much to Dominika Cibulkova, who will be #21 no matter what happens in the final, but it costs Sorana Cirstea the chance to rise above #28.

Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Goerges/Jurak def. (4) H Chan/Dushevina 6-4 6-4

Singles – Semifinal: (7) Elina Svitolina def. (4) Alexandra Cadantu 6-1 6-4

It really looks as if Elina Svitolina is going places. A semifinal last week, now a final — she is above #60. She will be going for her first real WTA title (she did win the Pune event last fall, but that’s sort of halfway between a Challenger and a WTA event).

Singles – Semifinal: Shahar Peer def. (Q) Magda Linette 6-1 6-1

A fascinating final: Svitolina the higher-ranked player by far, and the one in better form — but Shahar Peer the one with the experience. If Peer can win the title, she will return to the Top Hundred.

Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Buryachok/Kalashnikova def. (4) Pliskova/Pliskova 6-1 6-4

 

Women’s Look Forward: Carlsbad, Washington

 

It’s not really deja vu. The draw at Washington isn’t really much like that at Stanford. But it feels like a rerun. In terms of strength, both are about the same. Washington has one Top Ten player — #1 seed Angelique Kerber, who is in on a wildcard. There is one other Top Twenty player, #2 seed Sloane Stephens. The only other player who was Top Thirty last week is #3 Ekaterina Makarova. But we have a lot of players in the #30 to #45 range — #4 Alize Cornet, #5 Sorana Cirstea (who just moved into the Top Thirty, but too late to help her seeding. Happily, she is in Cornet’s quarter, so it’s a difference that makes no difference), #6 Mona Barthel, #7 Magdalena Rybarikova, and #8 Madison Keys.

There aren’t a lot of strong unseeded players, but Rybarikova opens against Christina McHale (who, however, is in a dreadful slump), Makarova starts against Eugenie Bouchard, Cornet will start against Yanina Wickmayer and then maybe Heather Watson, and Barthels might face Andrea Petkovic in round two.

Carlsbad, the week’s Premier event, is much stronger but hardly the mighty tournament it has been in years past. There are three Top Ten players — #1 seed Victoria Azarenka, #2 Agnieszka Radwanska, and #3 Petra Kvitova. Roberta Vinci is #4 and has the last bye. Samantha Stosur, who did so badly in Stanford, took a wildcard to earn the #5 seed. Jelena Jankovic is #6, Ana Ivanovic #7, and Carla Suarez Navarro #8.

Unlike Stanford last week, several of the seeds had better prepare for serious challenges. Jankovic might face Urszula Radwanska in round two. Ivanovic opens against Dominika Cibulkova. Suarez Navarro is likely to face Svetlana Kuznetsova in round two. And Stosur opens against Varvara Lepchenko, with Julia Goerges likely to follow.

The Rankings

This summer has been odd in a lot of ways. This week is the oddest, because while Washington is back in the same time slot, the Olympics were at this time last year, and they were very big, and they are not back. Serena Williams of course won gold last year. Maria Sharapova was the silver medalist. Victoria Azarenka won bronze (interesting that the top of the WTA rankings correspond exactly with the Olympic results). Maria Kirilenko was last year’s other semifinalist; Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki, Kim Clijsters, and Petra Kvitova were the quarterfinalists. The title at Washington went to Magdalena Rybarikova, over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, with Vania King and Sloane Stephens semifinalists.

King will fall hard, and probably Rybarikova too. Kirilenko appears bound out of the Top Fifteen. And there is at least a chance that Wozniacki will lose her Top Ten spot to Vinci.

At the top, though, there will be no movement. Serena is safe at #1. #2, now, is interesting, because Sharapova’s lead is only about 400 points and she is not defending them, whereas Azarenka is in action. So it appears there is just a chance Azarenka could rise to #2. That will probably be it for movement in the Top Ten.
