There are reports that Roger Federer’s back is hurting. Hard to believe even so. Yes, Daniel Brands is having a great year. Still…. At least Roger Federer wasn’t defending anything and will stay #5. But — ouch….

Singles – Second Round: R Haase def. (3) J Tipsarevic 6-2 6-2

Janko Tipsarevic’s prolonged slump continues; he will not rise above #18 and might fall. Of course, he’s in better shape than Robin Haase, who still has more than 200 points to defend.

Singles – Second Round: V Hanescu def. (8) R Bautista Agut 7-6(7-2) 3-2, retired (back)

Roberto Bautista Agut was defending a bunch of Challenger points, so it looks as if he will lose his newly-won Top Fifty ranking. He might well end up behind Victor Hanescu, who is getting close to the Top Fifty. Especially since Hanescu doesn’t even have to face Roger Federer.

Singles – Second Round: M Granollers def. F Delbonis 6-2 7-5

Marcel Granollers is also close to a return to the Top Fifty.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Mergea/Rosol def. (2) Brunstrom/Klaasen 7-5 7-5

Andreas Seppi would probably have won this anyway, but this way, he didn’t have to expend much energy. Which is fair, because he didn’t earn anything that counts, either.

Singles – Second Round: A Bedene def. (4) A Dolgopolov 6-3 6-1

It was a crummy day to have a first round bye! Four players with byes played in Europe on Thursday, and three of them lost; the only exception was Seppi, and he faced an injured opponent. Alexandr Dolgopolov will probably stay Top 25, but he won’t rise much.

Singles – Second Round: (5) T Robredo def. V Troicki 6-0 6-4

So far, Tommy Robredo hasn’t really moved, but a semifinal could take him to #26 — and he faced Bedene next, and despite blowing out Dolgopolov, Bedene came here ranked a mere #100.

Horacio Zeballos has been in a horrid funk since winning his first title this spring. Maybe he’s coming out of it — but it seems more likely that Carlos Berlocq ran out of gas after a busy post-Wimbledon season. Berlocq loses what could have been a chance to hit the Top Forty had he made the semifinal.

No hard feelings between Berlocq and Zeballos over the singles, it would appear.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Begemann/Emmrich def. Seppi/Troicki walkover

No, neither player here was injured. Instead, Viktor Troicki was suspended. At Monte Carlo, he was asked to give blood and urine samples. He gave the urine sample, but was feeling unwell and so refused to give a blood sample. On Thursday, he was given an eighteen month suspension, which will run though January 2015.

There is disagreement between the ITF and Troicki about whether he was advised that he could skip the sample. And he has not tested positive, and the urine sample was “clean.” Troicki has said he will appeal. But, for now, he is out.

John Isner was cruising along through the first two sets — no breaks. Then — boom! He seemed to be trying to imitate all those other high seeds who lost their openers. Then he got things together again, including earning his own first break of the match late in the third set. No points that count yet, though.

Igor Sijsling is never going to make the Top Fifty at this rate…. He became the fifth seed with a first round bye to lose his opener this week.

Singles – Second Round: D Istomin def. (5) Y Lu 7-5 6-2

Even though Yen-Hsun Lu was seeded and Denis Istomin wasn’t, they came in ranked just six places apart, so this is a pretty minor upset. Indeed, Istomin will probably be ranked higher if he wins his next match.

Singles – Second Round: J Blake def. (8) E Donskoy 6-3 6-2

Evgeny Donskoy came here ranked #72, but his record is interesting. He has 29 events (the ATP rankings list says 26, but his points page lists 29 events). Eleven of those 29 are Challengers — but of his 18 countable events, nine are Challengers. He has earned points at only seven of his eighteen ATP events. And the best result he had was a title at the Astana Challenger, which comes off this week. It looks as if he may well be ranked behind James Blake after this week.

Singles – Second Round: S Giraldo def. M Russell 5-7 6-3 3-0, retired

We can just hear Mardy Fish thinking, Why couldn’t that have happened to Michael Russell the day before? Russell became the only American player to lose to a non-American on Thursday.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Roger-Vasselin/Sijsling def. (WC) King/Spir 7-5 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Ehrlich/A Ram def. (1) Dodig/Melo 7-5 4-6 10-8

A pretty big surprise, given how well Dodig/Melo have been playing this year. Now if only Ehrlich/Ram could keep up this level for more than a match or two!

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Guccione/Hewitt def. R Ram/Skupski 6-1 6-2

Apparently only one guy named Ram can win on any given day….
