NEW YORK, July 23, 2013 – Two-time defending Mylan World TeamTennis champion Washington Kastles defeated the host NY Sportimes, 23-15, at SPORTIME Randall’s Island in Manhattan.
Washington (11-2), which has already clinched first place in the Mylan WTT Eastern Conference regular season standings and will host a playoff match on Thursday, began with a men’s doubles victory, as Frederik Nielsen and Bobby Reynolds topped Robert Kendrick and Jesse Witten, 5-3. Anastasia Rodionova increased the visitors’ lead to 10-4 with a 5-1 women’s singles triumph over Anna-Lena Groenefeld before Reynolds continued the Kastles’ early dominance with a 5-3 win over Witten for a 15-7 lead after three events.
Kastles’ marquee player Martina Hingis, who played for the Sportimes the last two years, then made her first appearance of the evening, pairing first with Nielsen for a 5-3 mixed doubles win over Kveta Peschke and Kendrick, then with Rodionova fell in women’s doubles vs. Groenefeld and Peschke, 5-2.
Hingis and Rodionova then won the first game in overtime for the final margin.
The Sportimes (4-9) have now fallen in six straight matches and dropped a game behind the Boston Lobsters for second place in the Mylan WTT Eastern Conference. The Sportimes visit the Philadelphia Freedoms on Wednesday needing a victory, and a Boston defeat to Washington in order to qualify for the playoffs.

SPRINGFIELD LASERS TO HOST WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP: With their victory tonight over the Sacramento Capitals, the Springfield Lasers clinched the top seed in the West and will host the Texas Wild for the Mylan WTT Western Conference Championship presented by GEICO on Thursday, July 25, at 7:00pm CENTRAL at Mediacom Stadium at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
