There hasn’t been this much talk about a racket switch since Pete Sampras refused to go with larger head size while he was in a slump late in his career and he instead stuck with his 88 square inch Wilson Pro Staff 6.0.
Now Sampras’s friend, 17-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer, who admired the American growing up, may actually switch from Pro Staff to another Wilson brand.
Federer is playing the tournament in Hamburg this week with a larger racket that is blacked out and will try it out against Daniel Brands today. The Swiss has been playing with a BLX Pro Staff 90 and says he is auditioning a larger 98 square inch frame. In all likelihood, unless Wilson is going to add another size to its pro staff line, that racket is likely either a Wilson Blade or Steam or a prototype of something new. The Pro Staff only comes in Federer’s original 90, a 95 and a 100, but the 100 is a light racket that a strong male pro would be unlikely to use. There are two different Blade models at 98 square inches and two Steams at 99.
“I think 90% of the players on the ATP Tour have head sizes between 95 and 100,” Federer said. “We have now tested this, and so far it’s going great. I can easily adjust with the new power.”
