Andy Murray’s Wimbledon triumph was a win-win for tennis and sponsors, with the Scot’s title victory sparking a profitable run on champagne to celebrate the first British men’s champion in 77 years.
The turn of events was particularly pleasing to official Wimbledon champagne sponsor Lanson, which told Bloomberg that sales exceeded expectations of around 15-20,000 bottles shifted during the fortnight at the All England Club. “There’s been a real Wimbledon fever,” an official said. “As soon as Murray won, the champagne bar got incredibly busy.”
Officials can’t give Murray all of the credit, with warm weather during the closing days of the tennis surely contributing to a thirst among well-heeled visitors ready to drop cash for bubbly. Lanson took the opportunity to introduce a new line at Wimbledon, the White Label cuvee, and also sold limited-edition champagne bottles with free cooling jackets in the style of a Wimbledon tennis shirt.
The company has been a Wimbledon sponsor for a quarter of a century and will carry on for another five years after a contract extension.
