Initially talk of a new Battle of the Sexes match between Serena Williams and Andy Murray, 40 years on from the famed Billie Jean King v Bobby Riggs showdown, was no more than a bit of Twitter banter. But new Wimbledon champion Murray is beginning to think more seriously about the prospect if it could be used as a platform to raise even more money for charity.

Murray’s holds dear the Rally Against Cancer campaign, designed to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity with close friend Ross Hutchins and British Davis Cup team-mate battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Last month he donated the entirety of his £72,000 ($108,000) winner’s prize from the Aegon Championships at London’s Queen’s Club to the fund.

Now he and his management company XIX Entertainment are thinking a Las Vegas staged match, first suggested by Williams before her shock early Wimbledon defeat by Sabine Lisicki, presents a perfect opportunity to raise even more money for a worthwhile cause.

It is understood that several iconic venues in the Nevada city, special to Murray because of its boxing history with so many classic world title fights, would be interested in hosting what would attract worldwide media attention.

XIX Entertainment is believed to be in advanced talks over staging an exhibition re-match of the Wimbledon, Australian Open and US Open finals between Murray and world no.1 Novak Djokovic at New York’s Madison Square Garden next March.

The BNP Paribas Showdown, played for the Billie Jean Cup, has been a fixture on the exhibition calendar since 2009 and could net both contestants a seven-figure sum.

Previously the event has been contested by the Williams sisters, Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Juan Martin Del Potro and Rafael Nadal.

The event is promoted by Jerry Solomon, chief executive of StarGames who has a close connection with Murray as he is the long-term manager of the Scot’s coach Lendl.
