Bastad
Singles – Second Round: (3) J Monaco def. (Q) H Laaksonen 6-4 6-2
Juan Monaco is defending finalist points, so he has some ways to go to assure his Top Twenty ranking. But this took only an hour and a quarter, so at least he’s in good shape in terms of rest.
Singles – Second Round: A Ramos def. (4) T Robredo 6-3 6-4
Funny to think that Tommy Robredo apparently had a hard time adjusting from grass to clay…. That will cost him a couple of ranking spots.
Singles – Second Round: (5) G Dimitrov def. F Volandri 2-6 6-1 6-4
Grigor Dimitrov is perhaps lucky that he gets a day off after this — he needs one more win to defend his points and retain his Top Thirty ranking.
Singles – Second Round: C Berlocq def. B Kavcic 7-5 6-3
Berlocq faces Ramos next, so we are guaranteed an unseeded semifinalist.
Doubles – First Round: (1) Lindstedt/Nestor def. Stakhovsky/Troicki 6-4 7-5
Doubles – First Round: (2) Marrero/Verdasco def. Garcia-Lopez/Zeballos 7-6(7-4) 6-3
Rather strange scheduling, this: Fernando Verdasco didn’t play doubles at Wimbledon, which could have been worth big points — but here he is back with David Marrero. And winning, of course — but the point is, if they want to have a shot at the year-end Championships, they aren’t going to earn it at 250 point events!
Doubles – First Round: (4) Brunstrom/Klaasen def. (WC) Dimitrov/Tillstrom 1-6 6-3 10-4
Doubles – First Round: Monroe/Stadler def. (Alt) de Bakker/Junaid 6-2 6-2
Stuttgart
Singles – Second Round: (2) P Kohlschreiber def. (Q) N Langer 7-5 6-2
After watching his ranking fall dramatically last week (see the Feature), Philipp Kohlschreiber is doubtless very happy to get back in the win column, but this isn’t enough points to count for him.
Singles – Second Round: M Berrer def. (3) J Chardy 6-2 6-7(1-7) 6-3
Why doesn’t Michael Berrer ever do this anywhere but in Germany? He costs Jeremy Chardy his Top 25 chance.
Singles – Second Round: G Monfils def. (6) (WC) F Mayer 6-3 6-0
Gael Monfils seems to be close to his top form, so this isn’t really much of a surprise — but Florian Mayer didn’t need this. He just fell to #46, and this means he won’t be regaining any of that ground.
Singles – Second Round: R Bautista Agut def. (8) M Klizan 6-7(3-7) 6-1 6-4
Martin Klizan loses his chance to rise above #35.
Doubles – First Round: Bagnis/Bellucci def. (1) Granollers/M Lopez 2-6 7-6(7-5) 10-7
There is clearly something wrong with either Marcel Granollers or Marc Lopez right now, but we’ve no idea what. They won’t keep the #3 and #4 doubles rankings much longer unless they can fix it, though.
Doubles – First Round: (4) Brown/Hanley def. Gimeno-Traver/L Mayer 6-4 7-6(7-5)
Doubles – First Round: (WC) Haas/Kern def. Mathieu/Paire 6-3 6-3
Doubles – First Round: (WC) Beck/Berrer def. Fognini/Munoz-De La Nava 6-4 6-3
Newport
Singles – Second Round: (2) J Isner def. A Mannarino 6-0 7-6(9-7)
So far, so good for John Isner — but it appears he’ll need a title here to stay Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: (3) I Sijsling def. Y Sugita 6-3 6-4
Igor Sijsling isn’t Top Fifty yet, but it really looks as if it could happen soon.
Singles – Second Round: (4) L Hewitt def. (WC) P Amritraj 6-2 6-1
This is the only tournament where Prakash Amritraj has ever had any luck — presumably he, like several of the players we will mention below, is a grass lover. But Lleyton Hewitt loves grass, too….
Singles – Second Round: M Przysiezny def. (8) R Ram 2-6 7-5 6-3
This is probably Rajeev Ram’s favorite tournament. He’s had more success here than at every other ATP event combined. Unfortunately, that means he almost always comes here with something to defend. In this case, semifinalist points. He will probably lose his Top Hundred spot as a result of this loss.
Singles – Second Round: I Karlovic def. V Pospisil 6-4 1-6 6-3
Amazingly, Vasek Pospisil out-aced Ivo Karlovic here — nine aces to seven. He had more points, too. But Karlovic managed to win. Too bad for him the grass season is over.
Singles – Second Round: (Q) J Hernych def. J Sock 6-3 4-6 6-4
Ivo Karlovic isn’t the only guy who lives for grass. Jan Hernych isn’t a huge server — he had only four aces in this match — but, somehow, he seems to improve dramatically on this surface.
Singles – Second Round: M Russell def. (Q) A Kuznetsov 6-3 6-4
It appears Alex Kuznetsov will remain stuck below #150.
Singles – Second Round: (WC) N Mahut def. T Smyczek 6-2 6-3
Could Nicolas Mahut possibly win two grass titles this year? He’s in the soft half of the draw — the only seed left in the top half is Sijsling.
Doubles – First Round: Kudla/Russell def. (1) S Gonzalez/Lipsky 4-6 7-6(8-6) 10-4
This seems to be a terrible place for #1 seeds — first Sam Querrey, now Gonzalez/Lipsky.
Doubles – First Round: Shamasdin/Smith def. (3) Blake/R Ram 6-4 6-7(3-7) 10-6
Doubles – First Round: (WC) Amritraj/Querrey def. Bemelmans/Przysiezny 4-6 6-3 10-5
Doubles – First Round: Ebden/Sijsling def. E Gil/Kolev 6-2 6-1
Doubles – First Round: Karlovic/Sharan def. Marchenko/Molchanov 4-6 7-6(7-1) 11-9
This Week’s Movers — Men
Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.
Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)
Leader: Lukasz Kubot — Moved 68 places, from #130 to #62.
Kubot was a shock Wimbledon quarterfinalist.
Runner-Up: Adrian Mannarino — Moved 38 places, from #111 to #75
Mannarino made the Wimbledon Round of Sixteen.
Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)
Leader: Kubot, cut ranking 52%
Runner-Up: Fernando Verdasco — Moved 19 places, 35, from #54 to #35
Verdasco made the Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)
Loser: Xavier Malisse — Dropped 27 places, from #61 to #88
Malisse made the Wimbledon fourth round last year; this year, he lost in the first round to Verdasco.
Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)
Loser: Roger Federer, ranking increased 2 places, 67%, from #3 to #5.
Federer, as last year’s Wimbledon champion, was pretty likely to fall this year — but by losing in the second round, he ensured that he would fall hard indeed.
Ranking Notes
For once we can’t complain about lack of movement in the rankings — there were a lot of big moves this week! Kubot, up 52%. Verdasco, 35%. Mannarino, 32%. Bernard Tomic, up 29%, to #42. David Ferrer, up 25%, to #3. Ivan Dodig, up 24%, to #37. Jerzy Janowicz, up 23%, to #17. Rafael Nadal, up 20%, to #4. And Grega Zemlja, up 20%, to #44.
That many big upward moves naturally required a lot of matching downward moves. Federer, down 67%. Malisse, down 44%. Mardy Fish, down 42%, to #61. Denis Istomin, down 40%, to #66. Philipp Kohlschreiber, down 39%, to #25. Florian Mayer, down 35%, to #46. Simone Bolelli, down 29%, to #115. David Goffin, down 29%, to #107. Jan Hajek, down 27%, to #122 (and going to fall more next week). And Lukas Lacko, down 27%, to #100.
This would seem to prove that there still are grass specialists out there — a lot of guys obviously earn a disproportionate share of their points on the stuff.
Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”
These are subjective picks!
Initially we were thinking we’d go with Janowicz — after all, he’s at a career high and made his first Slam semifinal. But note that he is only #7 on the percentage moves list. That’s really too low to be mover of the week. So we’ll go with Poland’s other player, Kubot. His move was a little cheap, due to his opponents’ health problems, but it was the biggest by far.
