Eastbourne

Singles – Semifinal: (2) G Simon def. (7) A Seppi 6-4 6-3

Andreas Seppi seems to be establishing a disturbing pattern here: Each year, lose one round earlier than the year before. Making it most unsettling is the fact that he lost to a player who doesn’t like grass much. The loss means that Seppi will fall from #26 to #28. Simon is going to be #17 no matter what.

Singles – Semifinal: F Lopez def. I Dodig 7-6(7-3) 6-1

Unlike the preceding, there was no element of surprise here. But it takes Feliciano Lopez to #34; a title would make him #32. What’s interesting is that Lopez and Gilles Simon will also face off in the Wimbledon first round. Lopez says that he would prefer to win here; for him, a title is bigger than a single win at a Slam.

Doubles – Final: (1) Peya/Soares def. (4) Fleming/Marray 3-6 6-3 10-8

It really is turning into a big year for Peya/Soares. Three titles so far in 2013, and they’ve now managed to win on two surfaces. They remain #2 in the ATP doubles Race. And the fact that they can win on multiple surfaces is obviously very promising.

The ATP also notes that this is their fiftieth win as a team.

Singles – Semifinal: (2) S Wawrinka def. G Garcia-Lopez 6-1 6-4

Stanislas Wawrinka can’t move this week, no matter what; he will be #10. But a title would give him a real shot at moving up at Wimbledon — and he suddenly is looking like a player who could do damage on the grass.

Singles – Semifinal: (Q) N Mahut def. X Malisse 6-3 6-3

We don’t know what Nicolas Mahut’s goals were entering this tournament, but it seems pretty certain that he has exceeded them! He’s now increased his points by more than 75%, and will rise from #240 to around #150. This may well be a career-extender for the 31-year-old Frenchman. Xavier Malisse, who made the semifinal here last year also, obviously won’t be moving much.

Wimbledon

The draw is out, and can be seen in Stats & Facts. The most obvious observations are, first, that Rafael Nadal is in Roger Federer’s quarter, and second, that Novak Djokovic got the “good half” — he is drawn to face David Ferrer in the semifinal. On the other hand, he has to open against Florian Mayer, a good grass player who is also the top unseeded player….
