Bethanie Mattek-Sands has always been known for being one of the “brighter” players on the WTA tour. She has been the first in setting many trends (good and bad) both off and on the tennis court. But yesterday on the lawns at the All-England Lawn and Tennis Club she debuted not only a Smurf-esque hair color but showed up wearing the most talked about accessory from tech giant Google. The new Google Glass is a voice-activated device worn like glasses that allows its users to check their email, take pictures, and even view satellite navigation directions. Mattek-Sands sported the technology as she warmed up for the year’s third grand slam, which begins on Monday.
Wimbledon requires that all players adhere to a strict all white uniform, allowing only minimal color in stitching or piping on any piece of clothing or footwear. The 28-year-old American has never let that deter her from pushing the fashion boundaries. You don’t have to wear color to dress differently, after all. Eye wear of any kind (excluding prescription) is not permitted to be worn by players during matches, so it will be interesting to see if she pushes the envelope by wearing them at the very least to walk out onto court.
Leave it to Bethanie to keep us enthralled during Wimbledon without even mentioning the actual game.
