Eastbourne
Singles – Quarterfinal: Elena Vesnina def. (2) Na Li 7-6(7-4) 6-3
This new model Elena Vesnina really seems to be mentally improved. A year ago, had she been playing a match where she had a shot at the Top Thirty, she would likely have frozen up. But, this year, she won — and with it, assures that she will rise to at least #28. Li Na loses her shot at the Top Five.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) Caroline Wozniacki def. Ekaterina Makarova 4-6 6-0 6-3
Caroline Wozniacki is the only seed left here, and even that was pretty close. Ekaterina Makarova added points, but won’t rise above her current #25 — and might even end up behind her doubles partner Vesnina.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Yanina Wickmayer def. (6) Maria Kirilenko 6-2 1-6 7-5
An interesting contest: Struggling Yanina Wickmayer against grass-hating Maria Kirilenko. It really does seem as if the grass has revived Wickmayer; she will probably rise to #40.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Jamie Hampton def. Lucie Safarova 3-6 7-6(7-1) 6-4
Lucie Safarova should have won this; she served for the match in the second set. On grass. And was broken. That means she will fall from #28 to #30. Our new #28 is none other than Jamie Hampton — whom, we note, has moved ahead of Venus Williams on the American pecking order. And Hampton could still go higher if she can beat Wozniacki.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Groenefeld/Peschke def. Kalashnikova/Rosolska 6-4 6-3
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Pennetta/Vesnina def. Chan/Safarova 6-4 6-1
Interesting that Elena Vesnina didn’t play with Ekaterina Makarova here. But, so far, Pennetta/Vesnina seems to be working….
‘s-Hertogenbosch
Singles – Quarterfinal: Garbine Muguruza def. (2) Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 6-4
We obviously can’t award any sort of “grass surprise of the year” award until after Wimbledon, but Garbine Muguruza is making a very strong case. This result plus the next combine to mean that Dominika Cibulkova wil be falling to #19.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Carla Suarez Navarro def. Tsvetana Pironkova 2-6 6-4 6-4
Carla Suarez Navarro is the player who overtakes Dominika Cibulkova; she will rise to #18.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) Kirsten Flipkens def. (7) Urszula Radwanska 6-4 6-4
Urszula Radwanska just keeps slipping, slowly but steadily. We show her down to #44 — but we’d still consider her likely to be a strong unseeded threat at Wimbledon.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Simona Halep def. Lesia Tsurenko 6-3 6-1
Yet another step forward for Simona Halep; with this, she clinches a Top Forty ranking.
Doubles – Semifinal: Cibulkova/Parra Santonja def. Dominguez Lino/Muguruza 7-6(7-2) 7-6
Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Begu/Medina Garrigues def. (3) Aoyama/Moulton-Levy 5-7 6-2 10-2
